This isn't a habit of mine, but every once in a while [in my 88 GT, auto trans] I like to stomp on it a bit from just under 20 and let it downshift and take off like a rocket! But, with the pedal to the floor, it downshifts, then shifts out of 1st at 5700 RPM! Ouch, it's in the red! Also, it won't downshift into 1st above 22 MPH- only around 18 to 20. Maybe my TV cable is miscalibrated? I dunno... I don't like a car that shifts in the red. Again, I don't floor it frequently, but when I do and see the needle creep into the red I get a bit concerned.

[EDIT]

Also, it does not do this when it downshifts to 2nd. It 'only' gets up to 5200 or so....

The hard redline isn't until 6000. The orange starts at like 5500 I think. So basically its just tellin you that you're getting up there and to be careful. Anyway, if you're at WOT your tranny should shift at redline (6000) but since Fiero's are useless up top, they figured it would be reasonable to lower the shift points.

Congratulations, you car is working normally.

Yeah, 5500 rpm is just the yellow line - a warning. Redline isn't until 6000 rpm. Still, you usually aren't getting much power after 5500, so shifting at 5700 should be fine.

don't worry about it.. i drive my automagic likes it's the last day i'm going to have it EVERYDAY for the past 2 years... same with my ol' SE, and she's fine... your not hurting anything just make sure your oil system is working properly and you won't toss a rod bearing. (not RPM related.. just crappy oiling related)
