Does anyone have speedometers that go higher than 120MPH. If you do would you please post pics of it and explain how you did it and/or where did you get it. Thanks

Well.. I'm working on installing a late model Saturn cluster that goes to 130... It's actually made by VDO and can be "programmed" by cutting / soldering jumper traces on the back, so it may be installable into a stock cluster somehow.. But don't hold me to that... I'm working on a whole new pod for it.

Have the same interest as "skitime". Would be very interested in converting to top speed measured between 165 and 185mph with the correct crystal for speedo head.
I also need something that reads more to the 140mph mark. I had my car out this weekend and buried the 180kph (120mph) speedo. There are lots of guys on this list that can get the first 100mph in less that a 1/4 mile so that last 20mph is not too hard to get past. I like Archies 200mph speedo but it is overkill for me. I want to be able to tell the diff between 60 and 70mph. In my honest opnion your speedo should be about double of "Your" normal cruising speed. In my case 70-75 or about 140-150mph would be perfect. I am just rambling sorry.

It certainly is possible. FOCOA at one time offered a 200mph conversion which was simply a 200mph face, and a replacement Crystal for the speedometer. If you run a search in Tech, you can find a couple of people (I believe it was FieroHoho & Possibly Joe Torma) who were experimenting with different frequency crystals. If you can come up with a crystal that works for you, I can create a custom face to match it (it may not look exactly like stock... but pretty close).
As I've said before, if someone can get the right crystal (for 150mph or even 200mph)- and provide me with an actual (or even approximate) angle for a few key speeds, I can fill in the rest! LMK what you come up with... as I'd really like to do the same

That's been the major problem, we need an electronic techie to come up with some conversion crystals and the correct radial mph points. Once that's accomplished I know that I would be contacting you for a special design face overlay/s to redo all instruments in color.

[/B][/QUOTE] From the Fiero Online Service Guide:
"From: Rick Stewart
"What is the formula for the speedometer? Can I change the crystal and recalibrate my speedometer to go higher?" Okay, here's the speedometer formula:
Crystal frequency (approx.) in MHz = 534 / max_speed.
So, for the 120mph speedo it's 534/120 = 4.43 MHz and for the 85mph speedo it's 534/85 = 6.33 MHz
Select the Xtal that matches your desired speedo range and recalculate:
534/freq = max
But the real problem is making the dial...
From: Oliver Scholz"
So, what do I get? Jeremy B.

yeah but that 180 tranlates to 120mph and 140 to 85mph right?

Correct, but for you USA guys you could start buying up all the un-used canadian 140kph gauges that we toss around like your 85mph gauges and relacibrate it to MPH and have a factory looking 140mph speedo as a drop in. No face plats just re-crystal and plug it in, you might want to clean off the KPH marking in the middle though.

That's a great idea. But I never see these in the Mall or Ebay. Where are they?
I'm a sort of electrical techie type. I wouldn't mind recrystalizing them for MPH.

That formula didn't work...for Hoho and me. The conversion only works on an 85mph speedo. If I were to produce a face and someday I will, it would be calibrated for rim & tire size: -Put a "blank face" on the guage after installing the crystal. -Mark where 55 or 65 is and derive the increments from there and make the face.
I have an 85 SE V6 one so it looks like the 85GT layout around here someplace, and I think, I have one backlite 140kph as well around some place. The 86SE V6 in canada was the only one to have the GT style layout back lighting and all, but be a 140 rather than a 180. Most wrecking yards up here sell the gauges for about 10-20$ each. Unless you get some prick that wants to sell your the whole cluster as one unit and wants like 150$ for it. I will see what I can dig up and post a list of what I have.

Why not take a 180 kph Canadian Speedometer and place a Miles per hour sticker over the kph in the center of the face. Then just change the crystal? Then you can use a q-tip with laquer thinner to make the orange mph numbers dissapear.

Heh heh.. I used photoshop to doctor my '90 Trans Am's speedo.. (I took out the MPH scale and erased the km/h that showed above the mph). I should do it for real
