I don't see what's the big deal with knocking the iron duke...

There's a thread in the tech section about how to get 195 hp naturally aspirated out of it.

It's just using the right parts.

Modding an MR2 turbo to 400hp is just a matter of the right parts.

Big deal.

The only fair comparisons are for each year they were both produced and stock for stock.

The fiero outperformed it from 85-88.
The MR2 was praised for better creature comforts like a quieter and softer ride and better sound system.

Drive what you're looking for.

All other comparisons are dollars and non-sense.

If it were only as easy as comparing stock to stock. but does the fiero have more potential then the MR2? i mean with all the nice V8 swaps out there. Like the LM5 or the LT1-4. Im sure one of those pushed to its limits can outrun even a B20B equipped MR2 with twin turbo and all the other mods. what do you guys think? maybe GBCT vs a new MR2 TT? that would be a slaughter...

There's no replacement for displacement

It is as easy as comparing stock to stock for most people since most people don't go wildly modifying their cars with thousands of dollars of custom upgrades.

To those who are looking for the best car to modify and make faster... cheapest... easiest... most potential... I would think the Fiero would be it. There are so many available drivetrain choices to chose from. Thats no knock on the MR2 either, as the Turbos can be ugraded to be very fast too!

But fot the majority of people, they will buy what is best stock... and their definition of "best" could be ride, handling, styling, acceleration, interior comfort... or likely a sum combination of them all.

I have a friend that has an 86 MR2 and a 91 MR2 turbo. We work together and I have driven both cars many times, raced against both of them too.

My 88 Fiero V6 5 speed (Isuzu) against his 86: No contest! From light to light, I totally left him. I actully slowed down because I didn't think he was even trying. At the next light I asked him if he was. He said, "Yeah, I had it floored." We raced about 5 times that day. I even launch from little more than idle and caught him. That car does feel nimble and light, but it would need some tuning to get rid of that understeer.

Me against his 91: At 50 mph he got beside me on the highway as we were coming back from work. I thought he wanted to tell me something, so I roll down my window... he floors it. He slows down again (I didn't even try to catch him) and we both go to 3rd gear @ about 50. Around 90 mph he had pulled almost a car length.

We might go to the drag strip this weekend for fun... I'll get ET's and such.

On the autocross course: I have never been beaten by any MR2 other than a very active member that designs almost every course and races in X class (expert) in his 93 turbo. There are about 6 1st gen MR2's that I can think of and 3 2nd gen. NA, and my friend's 91 turbo.

I do like the MR2's though. The first generation feels like it handles better than the 2nd (to me).
