Just as I made up my mind to keep the car, my kid came home from school today saying another guy wants my 88 Coupe (pic below). They will pay $1000 cash, plus install a V8 in my 88 GT. His family apparently has a shop.
I know lots of questions will need answered first, like: do they provide the V8 engine, so all I do is drop off the car then later I drive it away? What engine would they install - SBC... LT1... Caddy? Would they use a Zumwalt kit, an Archie kit, a BubbaJoexxx kit, or make their own? And is their shop any good? I would insist on keeping possession of the 71,000-mile stock 2.8 V6, because there's nothing wrong with it except a little oil leak somewhere.
What do you think of that kind of deal? What else would I need to ask? Here's the thread where I put my Coupe in the Mall section last year - https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum4/HTML/003807.html If you don't want to look at that, here's a pic of it...

1000 and install a v8? Even if you have to supply the v8 and the kit I think that is a more than fair deal. But then of coarse I do not know what all you have in the 88. But I am assumeing the value of the 88 is about 2k-2.5k or less.

Just read your post in the mall. At a price of 3500, I would require they supply either the engine or the kit at least.

If you provide the motor, and they buy the kit(archie master build only), and install everything, then DO IT!
Take that $1k, add another $2-3k from your pocket, and pickup an LT1 from a Corvette.
VROOOOM!
Best! Ben.

Make sure to get all of the deal in writing and singed by all concerned of course. Also, don't give them the coupe until they are done with the GT. I know you probably know this...just thinking out loud.
Good luck!

I think the most important thing is to check out their shop. They may think the Fiero is a straight forward swap like a front engine car.It doesn't matter what kind of engine kit may be used if they don't know what they are doing. For that deal,it sounds to me like you supply the engine and they will put it in.If you aren't careful you may wind up with a car that's in pieces and have them say nevermind when they find out it isn't as easy as they thought. No matter how you go,good luck!!

Good point, hugh. I will definitely check them out.
Here's some more info my kid came home with today: They are supplying the engine, a SBC. They will provide a complete exhaust. The kit, as I was told, is Ferrari. My kid knows that people often mistake that name with 'Fiero' and he knows to make sure that's what the meant to say. Whether they know the difference remains to be seen.
Now the really good part: They will also chop the top.
What do you think now?

That sounds like a very good deal. But I'd ask to see some of their work. My parents have took our van (now non-functional) out to our vo-tech to get some work done on it. They said they'd swap the engine or tranny (can't remember). Took them months, and we got it back unfinished. They didn't want to work on it anymore. Just be careful and ask lots of questions. And like someone mentioned earlier, they don't get your coupe until you take a spin in your GT.

Chuck! On the face of it - it LOOKS like a great deal (and may be one!).
Get details, details, details. You know how involved the swap is. You also know the basic value of the swap. Get your V8/GT up and running to YOUR satisfactions before you sign over any titles.

at first it sounds like a good deal to me too. but if they supply engine, who knows its condition. I wouldnt want to take the risk of them doing a homemade butcher job on my good car. I once got a great deal on a 348 chevy engine bored to 409. guy traded me my other car for it and him to install it in my 58 Impala. When it had weird problems I found the engine had a single center motor mount in front. The chevy needed 2 side mounts. He just bolted the engine mount thru a sheet metal pan. I ended up breaking u joint, pinion, trans case. He also mickey moused a 3 spd floor shifter in it when he switched the auto over to stick. I had to trade it off, would have cost more to redo it right than it was worth.
