Well, I'm probably about to throw in the towel. I buy my car and promptly throw a rod. Check into rebuilt engines as these sound nice and I'd like something reliable, $3000 installed.
Well, this is all fine and dandy but I can't get a loan without a co-signer. After this is revealed I look about for a signer to no avail. On a whim I plead on the forum for a signer. Nobody here is willing to, as expected, but West Coast Fiero gratiously offered to donate an engine as well as do the install. Excellent, methinks.
Turns out they don't have the time to do the install. Which is fine, I understand. I then check with a mechanic friend of mine to see how much it would be to get the donated engine installed. $630-$760 est. Mkay, more than I wanted to spend, but at least I'm still getting the engine free, right?
Well, no. I still have it available to me but shipping an engine is supposedly like $400. $400 of which I don't have. So even though there is a nice free enigne out there for me, I have no real way of getting it. The one option I still have is for me and BAM-BAM to go and fetch it; but for the next 2 weeks I have training that I absolutely CAN NOT MISS any of, so unless BAM wants to go tommorow (he wants at least a week's notice b4 we do anything) then I am hosed till the beginning of Feb. WCF is doing a bit of cleaning and doesn't want to hold onto it this long. I also have to move out of where I am living by Jan 31'st and need a car.
So, the question is, what in the bloody hell do I do? I'm not one to give up easily, and yet I feel like going to work on my car and having it 'accidently' crush my torso.

BTW: My thanx still goes out to the forum in general, and especially West Coast Fiero and BAM-BAM for at least trying to help me. Perhaps the situation is still salvageable, but I really can't hold out any more hope. I just keep getting crushed.

no matter what you plan on doing, I will hold on to this engine as I know you need it. As long as you say you are going to claim it, then I'll hang onto it for you, no matter how long.

Take a minute and chill. I am unemployed right now and my car has a head that has to be replaced and who knows how many other problems. What do you do in a situation like this? Find yourself a cheap vehicle and let your Fiero sit untill you can properly fix it. I have seen 84 four bangers for around five hundred dollars that way you are still driving a Fiero.

Hate to sound like my dad, but take the bus/walk/bum rides/borrow cars for the next few weeks. That's what I did for 4 months after murdering my Mazda.
What did you do BEFORE you had a car? Remember, if you are so inclinded, you can walk 10km in 1.5hrs...
Find a way

All I can say is hang in there. I bought my 85 SE (6) about a year ago 2 mo's after purchase I developed a nasty rod knock. bought a wreck off Tina and spent the summer driving wrecks while I had a 3.4 dropped in. In the last week found out I have 2 bad injectors, bad brain (Comp), + other misc parts. Not to mention the half axle, which thankfully is under warrenty. Owning one of these beasts can be a real pain at times but nothing makes me happier than when I'm driving my little white sleeper. Stick with it shi+ gets better.

I just have to say this. Part of owning a car is keeping it working......it isnt a free deal. I couldnt believe you asked a stranger in the first place to sign for a loan for you. If you dont pay they have too and no one for the most part knows anything about you. Im sorry your low on cash but If you cant afford to fix it yourself you have no business owning a car in the first place. I think your very lucky that someone offered to donate and engine to you, but you want them to deliver it to you too !!! Then you want someone else to put it in for you. The people on the forum are very helpfull and even go out of their ways to help, or supply parts they dont need to others less fortunate. I hope you get your car running, but please quit whinning for everyone to fix it for you. Id like a Archie V8 GT40 kitcar too, but no one here is going to give it to me because my other 3 cars are broken. Take some responsiblity and go pick up the free engine, thank them enormously, find some friends that will help you put it in. $700-800 to have it installed is an average price. If you dont have the money, get a better job or marry a rich girl. sheeeeeesh.
I cant help it, didn't you say you live at home and have no bills to speak of? Didn't you also say you have two jobs?
If you cant fix your car than park it and find something else to drive till you can go claim the engine WCF gave you.
I have a 2M4 that is parked right now because it needs a new power plant, I looked around and bought a 2M6 for $650.
I have a mortgage, and all the bills associated with owning a home. It would be great if someone donated a engine for the coupe "and" put it in. (Archie are you listening )
Moral? Patience is a virtue, if you give up this easy you should go find that Pinto.
Oh come now, the co-sign thing was a bit of a stab in the dark. I had tried everything else and figured 'what the hell, doesn't hurt to ask'. Did I expect anything? No. So back off.

About to give up? Remember that everything that has been offered to you was at no cost to you. If you learn nothing from this please learn that nothing in life is absolutley free. I think WCF, and everyone that is involved in this endevour are Saints. Do not tarnish their generosity by "giving up". Put a little sweat equity into it and go claim your free engine.

Kevin, I am still in your corner. If you can wait till the beginning of Feb, then we will trip down to Calif and get your engine. As for the install, I think we might be able to work something out. The important thing right now is getting the engine to the car or visa versa. Now, I am in the middle of trying to get my 3.4L in and working 6 tens. I will be missing some OT to go off to Calif, but that's neither here nor there. I know of a couple people on the Forum that reside in this region and may offer to help. I will also offer some mechanical assistance. You will have to provide the pictures of this ordeal . So lets sit back and collect ourselves and take a deep breath. To every problem there is a solution. It will happen be patient. BTW, where are you moving to??
Peace, B2 OUT!

You need to buy a cheap little beater to get around in until you can get the Fiero going again. I know I could buy a cheap, decent work car for what the mechanic quoted you to install the engine. Find a friend with a garage and do it yourself. Then you can continue to use cheap beater as a work car and while you fix whatever else on the Fiero decides to give you grief next. And believe, me there WILL be a "next".
Personally, given their quirkiness, I would never have a Fiero as an only vehicle.

Get The Fiero Club of Utah to come out here on the 12th for our BBQ and open house, at the same time one of the guys could pick up the engine and bring it back while thier here

Yeah, sorry I got snappy. Giving up? No. I just can't bring myself to do it.
I know that having a vehicle costs money. It's not as if this is the only car I've ever owned. My Cavy had a water pump go as well as some other misc. problems, as all cars do. It just seems like as soon as I get one thing lined out with this car something else goes awry. Then as I get it ironed out something else blows up.
Shipping I may have resolved again; and my mechanic buddy will still do the install. If I can just get the engine here...
A breather really is all I needed. I, of course, still appreciate all of the help I am getting.
Anyway, laters.

I can relate with the desperation. In the past I have been pretty despondant over my bad luck with cars. You need to vent, so cool, you vented. Keep your head up. I think it's amazing the kind of help you have been offered. It'll happen. This too, shall pass.
I don't know if you've considered this, but why don't you rent a U-Haul for a day or two and pick up the engine yourself? I know I'm looking for an engine, and I'm a long way away, but if the engine was in California and was free, I'd sure as hell try to find a way to pick it up, fast. WCF and BAM-BAM are doing great things for you. You are very lucky to have friends like them. So you pretty much saved $2250 by getting a free engine and a cheap install price.

This I know, and I've actually checked into a U-Haul and Ryder. $250, plus after 500 miles it's $0.30 a mile. So, all told, it was like $400 to do it that way.
Heh, just ASK BAM-BAM or WCF 'bout all of the fretting and thinking of ways to do this I've done. It's not as if I've just sat here and whined about it not being given to me on a silver platter. It just seems that way cause in my bítch session above I didn't elaborate enough.
Thanx for the suggestion though.

If I was on the West Coast and could make that run you'd be forking over around $100 for gas & food. Maybe if you offered say $150-200 to a club member they might take notice.

Heck ya just hang on to it and buy something cheap..
I'm doing a bunch of work to mine this spring and am driving a $500 Buick
Yeah sounds cheap but its amazing the car has 200k+ miles on it (odometer doesn't work a lot of the time) and I made a trip to Wisconsin 600 miles and a lot of other trips.
It'll be worth it when I get my car finished, engine, plenum the good stuff
