Driving thru Daytona Beach Sunday, I pulled up to a light next to a blue Viper Venom 600. No traffic, so I floored it when the light changed. He kept even with me in first, then he shifted into second and disappeared into the distance. He probably never topped 3500 RPM. Never seen anything street legal go so fast. Even louder than my car!

I can dig it... I ran a guy in a new Porsche Carrera Turbo a few months back just to watch that monster do what it was built to do The sound as he rapidly receded into the distance was exquisite...

Try Copher's U-Pull-It in Tampa (they also have yards in St. Pete and Sarasota). They usually have Fieros go thru pretty regularly. You have to check often tho because there are some pretty "Fiero-savvy" people around here and the good stuff gets gone real quick. Since you are in the Tampa bay area, why not join Suncoast Fieros? Meeting held every 2nd Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Located at Autoway AutoNation Pontiac (formerly Sunset Pontiac) 19320 US Hwy 19N, Clearwater, Florida. PM if you're interested... BobC

Those venoms are mean (they have twin turbos right and make 800hp?) . .. but to answer, "Why would you even attempt a run on a viper?" because it's fun. I was playing with a viper a few months ago on the turnpike and he was MUCH faster than the subaru(I passed him while he was doing ~70 and I was doing 110ish and he caught right up to me even though I was wide open on the throttle), but I've never had as much fun driving a car. Maybe if he was a better driver it wouldn't have been as much fun, but on the high speed bends where I was running flat out he was lifting and I could pass.
We gave each other thumbs up after about 10 minutes of this and I pulled off since I missed my exit and had to do a u.
Some people take this stuff WAY too seriously. Driving and racing is a hobby to me. Win or loose I have fun.
At my local cruze hangout one afternoon a guy showed up in a Pontiac Firebird Firehawk. He was talking about the guy in the Viper he had just dusted off on the way down to the hangout. I was a little skeptical at first, till he opened the hood and showed the Paxton supercharger setup he had. No matter how fast you are there is always someone faster, so enjoy the ride and take your losses in stride.

Back in high school, there was a guy that had a '69 Stingray (his dad was in the oil business). I was next to him at a light in my '81 X-11, and when the light turned green, I lit 'em up! I just wanted to hear that big block sing! What a glorious sound!
Same reason I 'raced' a Lotus Esprit V8 Turbo. Fun!
And a chance for us both to really run our cars.
Best! Ben.

When I ran by the fella in the BMW, I loved the look on his face. (Passed him big time w/my 78 beater Land Cruiser). I've GOT to put the V8 in my Fiero so It'll out run the Cruiser.

I had someone tailgating me over the bridge, even though I was doing almost 10 mph over. As we turned onto a 4 laner the light turned red. It was two 16 y.o. guys in a '98 Mustang 4.6. I figured I could probably beat them using the psyche trick. When the light turned green, although he reacted a bit slow, I let him go (this time). It was Christmas night, two teen kids in a high powered car, and probably a third strike lurking out there somewhere. Besides, I'm an old school street racer, the first one to the next light or the speed limit (45 here), which ever comes first, wins. Not any of this 100 mph, weaving through traffic with civilians stuff that the kids do today. I did drag a Countach with my Mini when I was in Europe in '87, just for fun and to hear it scream. The guy was feeling exhibitionistic that day and went for it. Which is what Countachs are all about.

Saw a specail like that a few weeks ago on TLC. Shelby did not design it but his cars were the INSPIRATION for it. It was actually designed by a Dodge engineer. If you look real close at them side by side and squint the viper is an updated Cobra.

Actually it was inspired but the Cobra Daytona Coupe that raced at LeMans.
When my LT1 gets dropped in I could pull a close race with a Viper, the LT1 should be putting out about 400HP with my Muncie tranny (if it holds up to that power but time will tell). That's what I'm gonna wanna do when I get it, forget rustangs, I want Vipers and Vettes for lunch.

Yup. That's right. All aluminum, 8.0 liters, now something like 450HP. VERY cool!
An interesting sidenote, Chrysler owned Lamborghini when the Viper was beign designed. Lamborghini designed a V10 (all aluminum) to use in their "baby Diablo" project. (the Diablo was also re-designed by Chrysler) Anyway, theirs was a 4.0 Liter, DOHC, 40V, 400HP.
Chrysler used the same design for their Viper project.
"Wait, the Viper V10 is 8.0 Liters and pushrod, right?" Yup. They wanted a more "domestic muscle" image for the Viper, and could build it with pushrods easier (and cheaper, keeping costs down for buyers), so they punched it out far enough to retain the 400HP mark, and changed the valvetrain design. ...At least that's what I read somewhere...
I have heard people say they used a Hemi design or other pre-existing V8 and added 2 cylinders, but aluminum blocks require a different design than cast iron, so the other explanation sounds more feasable.
hey just because some guy owns a viper that doesnt mean he knows how to drive it! You never know.
The guy I bought my '85SE from told me the most fun he had with it was went he was up in the Adirondack mountains and was running along with a Corvette. He said the vette had him hands down in the straights, but he caught him in the turns, and there are more turns that straights in the Adirondacks.
That was back in the late '80s - I dont know what year vette it was, or if the driver knew what he was doing either.
but it takes TWO things for a car to go fast - A great car AND a great driver.

I've read that it's the same 8.0L V10 from Chrysler's Dodge Ram pickup trucks, only a re-worked aluminum casting thereof. (and the natural rotating assembley is going to be different obviously.) It's a truck motor. (not that's nessicarily bad, the viper does indeed 'pull like a truck' heh.)
The Cala's DOHC V10 is I belive an *entirely* different engine. The displacement/design/goals are so vastly different that adapting one for the other would not return very much...
And if they can put a DOHC V6 into family cars, surely they could have fit real heads to the 8litre monster in an $80,000 car? (now wouldn't THAT be something! even 90bhp/litre out of the viper's motor would be simply terrifying!)
Best! Ben.
