mr2 means what??? by Darren's 87 coupe

I know on a Fiero the 2m4 means 2 seat mid engine 4 cyl, but i pulled up on a Toyota mr2 today and couldn't think what it stands for?mid engine ?(r)? 2 seater? any ideas? just made me wonder. I would never get one or want one. is there engine a mid mount? can't remember, but I think it was.

I also believe it stands for Midship Runabout 2. That's what I've seen on the car.

The original "MR2" was the prototype, and it was "Mid-engine" "Rear drive" "2 seater".

Now, in some markets (Europe and Japan?) they have modified the meaning, while retaining the nomenclature, to the "Mid engine runabout 2 seater" name.

In the US, it's still plain old Mid engine Rear drive 2 seater.

When the current MR-2's prototypes were sighted in Japan the name had been the MR-J standing for Midship Runabout Joyful...

I guess they were translating it literally or something.

I have sat in the new MR-2 and it did feel very go-cart like visually. But it wasn't enough to keep me from smiling when I saw my 85 GT in the parking lot!
