I’m curious. The Fiero attracts a wide variety of age ranges, but I have noticed it seems to attract quite a few young adults, around 18 to 25. I’m always surprised when I go to Fiero events to see the amount of young adults that own Fiero’s, and the amount of passion they feel toward their car. So what I’m wondering is why you choose to own a Fiero?
Is it because: 1. Fiero’s are basically cheap to buy. 2. A family member gave it to you. 3. This is my starter car until I can get a real car. 4. Always been one in my family, now I have my own. 5. Any car is better than no car. 6. None of the above. Generally speaking, every generation attempts to distance itself from their parents generation through different hair styles, clothes, music, language, and their taste in cars. And yet the Fiero seems to continue to attracted young adults year in and year out. It’s been a couple of decades since I was in that age range but I do remember one thing, I would have rather walked that drive a car I didn’t want to be seen in. So if you’re a young adult, why do you own a Fiero?
im 17 i bought a fiero because i don't like rice, and i find it's a classy car ,most of all it looks good "aside from the 2m4s" i like the fact that alote of people don't know what it is, and to have something that not a lote of people see everyday, also its very good on gas "2.8l" and it sounds v8ish

I've got an '88 coupe, 4cy. I bought it because I've always loved the way the looked. I bought it when I was 19, I'm 22 now, and am starting to make major differences on the way it looks. By spring time it will have a front hood scoop, a rear lid scoop, and side scoops. There are some other small things I have been doing to it over time as well.
It's one of the 'cheaper' cars to modify and the 4 cyl is easy to work on the engine. I've had older guys (40-50ish) ask me how a young guy like me can afford a car like that. And the girls seem to like it a lot too, they just don't like the console between the seats

[rant] The main reason is my friend got me hooked to them like Heroin. (Don't know whether or not to hate him for it)
1. Fiero’s are basically cheap to buy: This, and I like them. Its not something that everybody else has, and not many people even know what they are. McKay's gets mistaken for a Ferrari all of the time. The people that do know what they are scoff you and then all they see is taillights. There are tons of awesome mods for it, not as many as a Civic perhaps, but I don't think that you could buy an extra hood for a Civic and install a scoop on it as easily as you could a Fiero. There is a great 'community' feeling with it. I know that sounds odd, but I don't think that any other cars owners stick together quite as much as we do.
The handling is insane. Even the non-88's. Try driving an SUV right after driving your Fiero. I did, damn near rolled the thing. (Seriously)
Back to the cheapness thing. I like modern cars. I think that pretty much everything from before 1994 is ugly. Perhaps not hideous but I don't get all aflutter when I see A GTO or 69 Camaro. I think they look like boxes with wheels. I think the 3000 GT is just about as sexy as a car can legally be. The Viper also makes me wet myself every once and a while. The Fiero was way ahead of its time styling wise. Ever notice how similar the '89 Fiero and the current Camaro look? If not, then go take a looksie. The similarity will shock you. Honestly, I don't know what I would do if I had the money to get a 3000 GT. I could drive that right sexy car or for the same amount of money pimp a Fiero all to hell and have a Vette (Or viper, if I really went crazy) killer. [/rant]
My Dad bought his first '86 GT (without asking my Mom ) then did an engine job on an '86 SE, and my cousin did a motor on an '85 SE. Eventually my Dad traded off his '86GT and bought a low mileage '88GT.
I bought my first Fiero- a Black '84 SE for $700 when I was 15. I pulled the engine, replaced the Starter Solenoid, TO Bearing, Pressure plate, Clutch, and Computer right off the bat. (This car is now for sale BTW- $500 ) The car then developed a bad Head Gasket, which was replaced with a full performance rebuilt head. It was parked after experiencing blow-by and a heavily oiled Air Cleaner.
Later that summer (age 16) I was down visiting my Grandparents in Winona, MN and noticed a rough Gold '87 GT. A small loan later and it was my daily driver. Within a year after getting it and repairing a few minor issues- it recieved it's facelift of new paint & refinished wheels. Since then, it has experienced 100k pains of a dead 2.8, replaced by the 3.1, followed shortly by an absent 3rd gear in the auto -resulting in the 4spd OD. And there's always more...
Anyway, I can't think of another car I'd rather be interested in, it's kind of "in my blood".
BTW: I'm now 22... so that's 7 years of Fieros so far!

I'm 24 and I've loved the fiero since they came out with the fastback GT. At the time they were new, I wasn't able to drive - BUT - my dad could and he saw one on a used car lot and bought it. After graduating college, my parents gave it me as a graduation gift.
I'm always amazed how modern they look for a 15 year old car. How many other cars can you say this about?

I am 25 and own 5 cars. I bought the fiero becasue of its looks, its handleing and its unique. Everyone here says people give them bad news about thier fiero when they see them. All I get is "I have not seen one of them in a long time......thats an awesome car". I live in the mountains and driving this on the twisties is like nothing I ever felt. Its even better then my firebird. I dropped my wife off last night to pick up her carand she was folowing me. I was not paying attention if she was behind me or not. When she finally got home she said "How were you going so fast, I almost went off the road trying to keep up." I was not intentoinally speeding but I was taking curves pretty fast. This kind of ability in this styleish of a package is fantastic. Everywhere I go I get compliments. My wife just told a guy last night that she wants another one. Well thats why I own one anyway!

Pls don't flame me, but I couldn't afford a CRX SI, Civic Si, Integra Type-R, MR2, Skyline GTR, Subaru Impreza WRX.(need I go on) So I love rice and japanese cars, so I went with an American built, that handles like a dream. I wish I had phoned a couple mechanics before hand I didn't know how much they are going to cost to fix.
I aways thought a lot of older people (no offense anyone... I mean people older than your teen/young 20's person) own them too. A lot of them are probably long time owners!
My father bought his first in 1990. I was 13 at the time and instantly fell in love with the car.
I bought my Formula when I was 19 (I am now 23... almost 24)... only a little over a year after I had bought a 1991 Probe. I was originally going to sell the Probe but decided to keep them both! The formula, being one of the more uncommon models of Fiero and being in such good shape I didn't want to subject it to Buffalo winters!
I still own the Formula, and have since replaced the Probe with a 97 version of the same. I love the Fiero's uniqueness... the fact that its different and a true sports car (IMO anyway). I like the Probe for its rev-happy 4 cyl engine, sleek body style and especially cavernous cargo carrying ability! But its certainly no Fiero, and I wouldn't give up my Fiero for it.

can't afford a Lotus... had a 94 300zx tt wrecked it and got part of an insurance check.. bought my 86 SE dove in head first into that and have been sucked into the Fiero haze. my GT is faster than the 300 ever was, and for almost the same maybe a bit less $. (wrecked a 94 Ranger Splash 4x4, and blew up an 87 Supra t, and 94 lebaron.. these cars just WON'T die!) ------------------ 12.920@109mph... "thats all I have to say about that"

I'm with Black88GT too. At least here in FL I haven't seen any teenager (or close) with one. Still I like the idea of them getting interested as long as they don't rice them. For that you have the Hondas. MHO..
I bought mine at an estate auction when I was 19. (I'm 21) I didnt even know what a fiero was at the time, but the looks attracted me to it. It only had 42k miles, and no rust. (Not even on the frame! Rare for western NY.) Best of all, i only paid $1760 for it. It's reliable and gets 38mpg H/W. I sometimes think about selling it, but love it too much. On the other hand...for a 5spd 88 GT, with t-tops....

I'm 19 now, and have had my Fiero for 2 years. In the summer/fall of 1999, I was desperately looking for a car. (17, and still no ride! ) I kept reading the papers, and checking the internet for anything in the area. I lived in Medicine Hat at the time, so there wasn't really a lot of selection. I took a look at and drove a couple cars every weekend for a little over a month. As for what I was looking for:
1 - Something that looked good: I refused to even look at anything I considered to be a "box on wheels". I had to be different. I wanted people to see the car and think, "There's Brandon!". Not see a car and think: "There's a blue cavalier...."
2 - Something fast: I'm 17, right? I want to have fun!
3 - Something cheap: Both to buy, and to run. That fact kinda kept me away from the Camaro's and such, 'cause the V8's in 'em are such gas pigs.
So anyways, I had been checking out Prelude's, daytona's, etc. I hardly drove anything, 'cause I'd get to the place, and see the car is totally rusted out, or whatever. My price range was under $4000CDN, so that means cars from the 80's. I was at work reading the paper on break, and saw a new add for a "1986 Pontiac Fiero SE. Gold, 2.8L V6, 60,000km's,...... $5000" I thought, hmm... a little out of my budget, but I'd call the guy and check it out. At this point I didn't even know what a Fiero was. I asked my dad about it when I got home, and his response was: "Oh, I always heard about those flipping over on Deerfoot trail in Calgary..... But, they're nice looking little sports cars, I'm sure they were just being driven too fast." So we checked it out the next day (Saturday) We got to the place, and I couldn't see a gold car, it was around back. As soon as I saw it, I fell in love! It was beautiful! I didn't even know it was a 2-seater, or mid-engined or anything at that point. I drove it, called the guy back the next day, left a deposit, and bought it for $4500! The rest is history! I'll never sell this baby, and can't wait 'till I'm out of college, and will be able to buy a GT and do it up! I'm hooked for life.

Ok. So I'm 27 - does that count? I've had Fieros since I was 19. Actually, my friend got me hooked on them when I was 18.
I don't remember them really from the 80's. The only time I've ever really noticed a Fiero then, was when my brother and I looked at some used cars in '87. I knocked on the hood and the front bumper and decided that it was a piece of plastic crap . How ignorant of me.
Anyway, in 1992 my friend took me for a ride in an '84 he just bought. I didn't care too much until I got inside. MAN, WHAT AN AWESOME FEEL, I thought. I felt like everyone was looking at us.
I guess that sums up my main reason for interest in Fieros - looks. #2 - uniqueness - midengined fiberglass. Enough said.
#3 - cost. A really inexpensive exotic.
Sometimes I curse at my baby. Than I kiss her better and promise not to argue ever again.

Im 21 now, I bought my first Fiero, an 84 SE, when I was 17 because I needed a car and it was there! I knew I wanted a small sports car but didn't know exactly what I wanted. When I saw this Fiero I knew it was exactly what i wanted. I knew nothing about them at the time, I didn't even know the engine was in the rear! I loved the car but the first time I saw a GT I knew I had to have one. I traded the 84 for an 86 GT which I really loved then totalled it about a year and a half later which still makes me sick. Now its my parts car. Bought an old 240z (also very awesome cars) for the time until I could find another GT which I did about 6 months later, an 87 GT. These cars are just so unique. Every good thing I want to say about them has already been said. I can't see myself driving anything but a Fiero. Long live the Fiero!

you mean reasons besides it being the perfect car for a young adult? i've liked them since i was 15, found about about them after searching around lamborghini kit cars. I'm 19, own a 87 gt, and love it to death. reasons? i'll admit, price was a big part, but other things were: its looks(sometimes i just go and stare at it), VERY unique, rare, quick, customization is endless, looks people give it, and its a really good conversation piece... people always ask me 'why i like them so much?', and 'what the heck is it?' I like them so much I'm considering hunting down another one... an 85 gt or 86/87 se and doing a total restoration! I'll never sell mine, unless... no, i'll never sell mine

I'm 20 now and have owned my fiero for 3 years now. the reason why I bought a Fiero was that it's not a ride that many teenagers have plus it's so different from other cars.
All my friends drive Hondas and VW's so I got something different.

Currently at age 17 (will be 18 in a couple weeks), I've had three fiero's. I absolutely love them. Ever since I was a kid, I've loved the idea of a 2-seat sports car. My father always had his toys when I was growing up. He had 3 MG's, two were MGB's. Those things were really sweet! He's had a Mazda Miata, '68 Camaro RS, always had a toy. Then I got hooked into the sports car craze, and wanted a small two seater. I eventually got a deal on an Eclipse that I just couldn't refuse, so I bought it. I liked it, but didn't love it. Some @sshole ran me off the road and I totaled it. With the insurance money I got, I was hunting down the perfect car. I never found it, until I started doing lots of research on Ferrari kitcars. Then I got my first fiero. I loved the thing, but wanted more out of it, so bought my current GT. Now this is the car that I will take to the grave with me. It is everything a true sports car should be- 2 seats, RWD, and... the engine behind the driver! Aside from that, I live in an area where everybody has some form of rice, and I hate rice, especially imports. To have something that can destroy almost any rice rocket on the road, at a fraction of the cost, with the exhaust symphony that you hear past 2,000 rpms that the v6 delivers... This is the car to have, and it shuts up the ricers. Aside from cheap costs, these cars are just plain SEXY! As many, looks have drawn me in. My GT is also a chick magnet (at my age, is definitely a good thing). Also living in an area where everybody has a new(er) car, and where older cars aren't very common, when people see my fiero, that don't know anybody, ask me how in the he1l I can afford a Ferrari, and insurance on it. I know that they don't know any better, but I take it as a compliment. And for the peeps that do know better, they just think it's sweet that there's another fiero owner around, as we are few in this area. This is going to be the car that I am going to take to the grave. And if my engine would ever die (sooner the better), it's just time for that 3.4 I have sitting around...

I'm 19 and my Fiero days started when I was about eight. My older brother and I went over to look at an 88GT that was listed in the paper. The car was the most beautiful thing I had seen, It was black w/gold rims. Well he didn't buy it, but that was my introduction to Fieros. Life went on and I really didn't think about Fieros much after that.
Then when I was 15 and on my way to school one morning our bus was passed buy a 86 or 87GT doing about 90mph. Everyone on the bus was in shock thinking they had just seen a Ferrari. I new what It really was. That was the moment that I knew I wanted one. For about a week after I told every one some day I was gonna own one “some day”, of course everyone’s reaction was "sure" and rolled their eyes.
Well as luck would have it when I was 16 and I had take behind the wheel for my license, the driving school owner had about 6 86-88GT's that he was using as student driver’s cars. One day while I was driving with the owners son (one of the driving instructors) we went buy their house so he could grab some paper work.
We pulled into the drive way and there was a mini car lot of Fiero's. I was so excited that I blurted out "boy I sure would love to have a Fiero".The son looked at me and said "you know there for sale".I was on cloud nine about a 2weeks later my Mom and I went back to look at them and ended up coming home with one a maroon 87GT, my first car.
As they say the rest is history, I'm now 19 and as of now I have 3. I'm sure that will change Sorry for the long post, to answer your question I just like em and there different, there really isn’t any other car out there like it unless you have 100k. Not every one has one and most of the women I meet simply LOVE them .
------------------ Do you know why America picked the eagle as it's national bird? It's because its the only bird that isn't afraid of the storm.
I got my first Fiero when I turned 17. I had always wanted one. I loved that car and litteraly drove it to death. It died when I was 19, and sadly my great great (yes 2 greats) grandmother died about 3 weeks after my car did. The only good thing that came from my grandmother's death was she left me a nice chunk of money. I used that money to open my own buisness and too purchase my next Fiero. An 88 GT with a 455 RWH 350. Absolutly loved that car. Wish I had never sold it. But I was moveing to Canada and did not want to torture my poor car with the canadian winters. Well I am back in the states now and am slowly getting my 86 se 2m6 on the road. But basically I bought a Fiero cause I loved the looks. The performance they can give was an added bonus I never expected. Been hooked ever since

I got a 84 4 speed as my first car. I liked it but wanted something faster so i sold it and eventually got my 86GT. I like the 85gt look better so I might start looking for one of those.
no ABS, no traction control, no air bags, no self leveling suspension, no DRLs, no OBD II, no auto window controls, etc, etc. And the Fiero fits those requiremetns while still looking good for an older car.
I could have spent 6 times what I paid for my Formula for a different car like my 18 y/o brother did this year, he may be faster at the moment, but I can outhandle him.

quite frankly, i figured it would be a good car to build a super car out of. its rear engine. its dang sexy. and there are plenty of ways to make it better. and if there is any body mod you want that you cant find. all you have to do is talk to ausi or some other body man, and they can make it.
------------------ We are all different for a reason
I just turned 23 last Friday (14th) but I bought my first Fiero at age 21 on April Fools Day last year. For the deal I got on it too, I thought it the lady had to be kidding... It all started when my buddy got me hooked on the car back when I was about 18. He bought a red 85 GT and he called me up one day to tell me about it - i must say i was very ignorant at the time (forgive me) because all I had ever heard about was how they caught on fire and weren't reliable cars. With that said though, I still thought they were beautiful looking cars and I never saw many around. His was in rough shape but nonetheless, he put a new transmission in it and brought it over to a buddies house one night during that summer. He told me he had it out front and that he had to take me for a ride in it... if you knew anything about my friend, you would know he drives like a nut and in p.o.s. honda civics that I rode in with him so I was kinda worried. I knew the Fiero had some power since it had the V6 in it but I never thought I'd always remember that first ride. We headed down the road and thru the first turn, he was already into it. Then we came down a hill and turned onto a side road where there were 4 cars in front of us and I saw that look in his eyes... needless to say, he jumped on it and took all 4 cars and I looked over and he had the speedo pegged. I was holding on for dear life since there was another car coming the other way and he refused to get back over til he passed that last car. Well we made it and by the time we got back to my friends house I was already thinking about how I could get my hands on one. Then, he let me drive it and before I knew it, I was going over to his house and asking if he wanted to go anywhere just cuz I knew he'd throw me the keys I had spent my bank account for a 5spd Grand Prix SE so I had no money to use to shop around with. So, the years passed and my dad called me at work one saturday and said "Hey, remember how you were looking for a Fiero? Well, I just saw a really nice looking white one and I think it's one of those fastback GT's. It's actually only about 2 miles from the house too. it may be a lot but you should at least stop and check it out on your way home." Well, I left work early that morning just to check it out. I almost knew exactly where it was though I had never seen it before - I pulled in the driveway and there it was... I thought to myself, "damn, it looks in really decent shape. I bet they want like $4500 for it." This old guy came out of the garage and asked if I liked the car and I asked him how much... "Thousand bucks" he said. I thought "aw man, what is wrong with this thing?" but I kept my mouth shut and he went on to say that it was just inspected, it ran great, they were the original owners, and the wife only wanted what she thought was the blue book value and she was selling it cuz it was too hard for him to get in and out of and she didn't drive it much anymore either. Obviously, I bought the car that day and the rest is history. I also just bought an 87GT that I'll be modifying but it's gonna have to wait til after graduation next year. Sorry I rambled so much about my whole story but to answer the original question, "Why do I own a Fiero?" Well I'd have to say it's because of the looks, and the way it seems to fit like a glove when you're in the driver's seat, because they're easy to work on, and there's so much that can be done to them. Price doesn't hurt either! And this forum and the people I've met at the shows have made me even more passionate about Fieros too seeing that there are so many people who care so much about them and who also always look out for each other. The fact that I met the love of my life thru Fieros makes it all the sweeter! (and I know she has great taste in cars but it's hard to keep up since she has one more Fiero than I do Love you, Jennifer)

I am 16. I have always liked the car a lot. When I started to look at cars to buy, I wanted a GM sporty car, possible camaro, or monte carlo. Well got looking and looking and this Fiero car kept turning up. So I did some looking into and loved the car before I even had one. I totally hooked before I was actually hooked. They are not that much money and are great looking and pretty fast with the 6 in it. Of all the cars in the school, I think mine attracts the most because of what it is.

I'm 25 and I have had my Fiero for a little over 5 years. At the time I paid $3k for it. It had >80k miles on it and was super clean. I fell in love with it on the first trip behind the wheel. Since then it has given me over 100k ADDITIONAL miles with relatively little (as I see it) trouble. Just some stuff like alternator, starter, and some little stuff. I love the way it handles, and for a 2.8 V6 with over 180k miles, I still can run with some bigger cars (displacement and power) and EASILY outhandle them. I don't really know why else, just that like some of you have said, its a sexy car for 16 years old, still modern looking as far as sports cars go, even by today's standards.
Unfortunately, I only have 1, and am too poor to even try to get another one (or two) right now, but its not out of the question in the future. Keep these beauties alive forever.
Don't wreck 'em, restore 'em and enjoy 'em, they're about the most fun car I've ever driven.

i and most people find the 84 to 86 2m4's not that attractive even the 87 and 88s are just to plain ,as for my ride you ask 1986 Fiero se v6 "the non 2m4 style of coarse"

I'm 20, got my first car when I was 17. It was an '87 4-cyl, black. Needed a fender and a mirror replaced but that was it... $700! I had always liked Fieros because they have that exotic look (even though they're not). I loved how low it was when I got in it and loved the center console.
That first car was better than what any of my friends had at the time (now things have changed) and it was cheap enough that my parents didn't care if I bought it.
Anyway, it was totaled not long after I bought it (not my fault). I used the insurance money and bought my 2nd one - '86 GT, black of course. It's on it's 2nd engine and I've replaced just about every part after endless frustrations. The car still needs a paint job bad! But for some reason I can't give up on it. After school though, I do plan on buying a NEW car. But I don't think I can get rid of my Fiero, it will always be my project.

lemme say it this way: poor man's sports car, actually I passed up a few civic's and preludes for this thing, ever since I saw my first one when I was about 7 years old I've loved them, I now own 4 of them(all 2m4's) cause I haven't found a gt for sale yet, but I have the cash and I'm just waiting for somthing in the area. by the way I'm 18.
I didn't know anything about cars until I owned one. My ex-boss sold it to me for $650. '87 Fiero GT, that was "babied" (i.e. raped).
I swear this car has been re-incarnated every year since I've had it. Any part you would touch on this car would break. We were changing the brakes and they brittled away as soon as they hit the ground. We replaced pretty much every part in this thing except "knock-knock" the transmission. A full engine rebuild, new brakes, you name it we did it. The car runs pretty nice now, except the speedometer and hence the odometer stopped working... they can wait to get fixed.
I'm 23 now, I got the car when I turned 20.
