I've read that the best way to install a sunroof is to swap the whole roof with a donor car sunroof, but has anyone just cut through their hardtop and installed an original sunroof? Why isn't this recomended? Thanks Mikw

Just my opinion but, by the time you remove the weatherstrip channel (which is rivited in place) and all of the other sunroof pieces from an original donor car sunroof and cut through your roof and re-rivit and re-install, you could have just switched the donor roof for the original roof (besides, you don't damage the original roof and there are those who do not want a sunroof on their car - kit car builders, for example)
It's just easier to swap out the roof panels.....

Removing the roof from a donor and using it on yours is a cake walk compaired to "rigging" in a sunroof that is not supposed to be there. Not to mention the fact that the sunroof will be one of those dumb tiny ones that look "queer". Id just stick with the roof conversion its easiest and looks the best!

The reason no one does it is because it can't be done...unless you use an aftermarket sunroof. The sunfoof panel has the channel for runoff and weatherstripping attached to the roof panel. It also has the camfer necessary to "seat" the glass.
Fierobear and I pulled a sunroof off a car in 30 minutes last weekend. the interior trim was already removed but you get the idea, it's not a hard job.

Just curious, but would it be that hard considering the cutout lines are in every Fiero roof and the holes for the latch are already in the roof? Noticed that the other day when I took out my headliners.

Lets see if I can help a bit. A sunroof roof panel is NOT just a regular roof panel with the hole cut out. They are two entirely different pieces. The sunroof roof panel has the area where the seal goes molded in to accept it. It also has the inside edging bonded on to hold that strip of rubber that holds the headliner in around the opening. But if you want to cut a hole and give it a try please do. And take some pics.

Yes you can ues the roof panel from any year or model of fiero. They are all the same. Be sure to get the under hood stuff to. There are two brackets and a shelf for stowing the glass panel when not on the roof. And a wind deflector. These are often missing I have a few if you need one.
