Hey guys, being a new fiero owner, and also a stereo buff at the same time, I want to increase the sound in my car. I already have the dash speakers replaced with those kenwood 4"x 10" that I saw on www.onlinecarstereo.com but I would like to replace the seat speakers without ripping apart the seats. So has anyone done this? Any ideas on what I can do if i can't get at them?
Well thanks again guys, oh and I just want to say, I hope all the guys from ontario had a great time at the Grand Bend meet. I really wanted to go, unfortunatly today was the niceset day in so long, so I had to play golf.
See ya on the flip side!

SD, There is no way to replace the headrest speakers withoput pulling the seat apart. It's not as hard as it appears. Go to Mr. Mikes website, he has a detailed proceedure on this very subject. www.mrmikes.com

Hey man, If your wanting a nice stereo system, I would ditch those stupid seat speakers, and if you want any rear speakers at all upgrade to 4x6 component plates like they use in the 86+ models. I am installing my second competition system in my second Fiero, and this time I will not use any rear speakers. Even the 86+ 4x6's are too damn close to your head its annoying, I can't even imagin all that comming from the headrest! Anyway, I am looking for some panels from a car that has the speakers in the seats, since they have no holes for 4x6 grills in the back. I want to get rid of mine, and trade someone for some 84-85 panels without holes. So if your interested in just ditching those stupid seat speakers and putting the 4x6 speakers in the rear sail's, email me and maybe we can just trade panels. Mine is from an 86 interior, grey and in pretty much perfect condition. I will be covering my entire interior in vinyl soon, so the color and condition of yours really doesn't matter too much to me. LMK, Thanks
BTW, I don't think there is anyway to remove/replace those seat speakers without haveing to pull the unpolstray off the headrest, but maybe I'm wrong.
1) remove the seats from the car by unbolting the (4) 13 mil nuts from the floor of the car and take the seats out. Unplug the speaker wire. No is a good time to vacuum that crap out from under the seats
2) using a torx-50 bit and 13 mil bit disassmble the back part of the seat from the base.
3) the back part of the seat un-zips at the bottom. Unzip it and slowly pull hte cloth up. There are two steel rods running along the inner seems that you need to remove. Use a good pair of dikes to remove the hog rings (small metal staples) so that the rods can slide out.
4)remove the hog rings from the upper seem and the cloth slips right off.
5) replace the old speakers with a good set of Pioneer 2 inch speakers. I don't have a part number handy but shop around.
6) Go to a local upholstery shop and ask to buy a small bag of new hog rings and a hog ring application tool. reverse the procedure above. Alternatively, have the upholstery shop re-attach the covers.
I can swap a set of speakers in under an hour. It's just a matter of having the right tools and a little practice.
Good luck

I don't have a competition system in my car, but I think it sounds pretty darn good. Plenty of volume and still clear. I'm using a set of JBL 5 1/4" separates (used to have the mids in the original dash holes with the tweeters where the vents used to be--see pic). Kenwood amp, Bazooka tube, and a nice Sony CD player. Now that I have an '86, I'll probably add some 4" speakers in the sail panels (whatever they're called) for rear fill (maybe), and use AusFieros' door speaker pods and sub box. Unless you're about 4 1/2' tall, the headrest speakers will drive into your shoulders instead of your ears. Ditch 'em. A nice set of 4x10s for the dash and a good head unit and you'll be set.

Well I have to disagree with some of you on the headrest speakers. That is why there is a fader function on most stereo's. I have Planet Audio 4" In the dash pushing about 50W RMS, Planet Audio 3.5" in the headrest @ 40W RMS with a Sony L1035 EXPLOD that will be in AusFiero's center console sub box after Mr. Mike gets done with the leather. All will be fed from an Eclipse 3650 5 channel AMP. If you set the fade correctly (everybody's different) You get a great full sound without over burdening your ears. If you split it 50-50 you all you will hear is the headrests. If you have good AMP you can set your dash for full range and the headrest for the highs or visa-versa, it's your choice. I do have to agree that the B-pillar speakers make things more idiot proof, but the headrest speakers work just fine. Go to www.mrmikes.com Like I said before, he has a detailed post on how to change or add headrest speakers.

i only recently got a fiero with the seat speakers (got my '87 first), but i like them better than i thought i would. it's still all stock, but like bam bam, the first thing i did was adjust the fader to use them for just rear fill. i think if you worked with the location, upgrade the speakers, amp them in proportion with the fronts or work to exact the fading, and maybe even add some surround and/or delay type processing, the location might be considered perfect.
just occured to me if mblackwell has the seat speakers in his fiero (don't know wht year he has) and the stereo he has (got one like it in my chevy. has separate eq for front and rear plus surround processing) is hooked up correctly i'd be curious to know what he thinks of the location.
