I had an 84 that never caught fire. My Northstar gets real hot inside the engine bay and inside the car, more so in the summer. But no, I've never had a fire in a Fiero. I did hear however that my old Dino replica based on an 84 chasis with a 2.8 did catch fire. Apperantly the wiring harness came loose and rested on the manifold, causing the fire. I think that the fires were exagerated by the media.

I had a fire in one of my fiero's, but it was my fault because i shorted some wires...oops, but other than that i have had no fires. There is a 85 coupe in a salvage yard around here that burned....the thing is chared. It only has about 60K miles on the engine too.

Look around hard enough and there is bad press on every car ever produced in the world. OK..Fieros had a fire problem in 84, fixed by 85 model. Not bad for a manufacturer of so many cars as GM is.

The RX7 boys can scoff all they want because in Australia RX7s for many years had problems blowing up turboes OFTEN. Didn't see Mazda rectify that problem for 2 models and 8 years. Give me GM....they fix their problems faster.

And on RX7s. Who wants a car that sounds like a dragonfly on steroids anyway. I dont care how fast it goes. Cool cars are a total package. Not, look mine goes faster.

My first Fiero was an 84 that I treated like a baby, it did catch fire, it was maintained the best way possible. That, for some strange reason didn't stop me from getting 2 more fieros over the last 14 years, currently 87 GT Automatic. I don't know what it is; this little car has my heart. I've been reading how the other forums talk trash about the Fiero and I must say that in general they are not far from the truth. (Here come the flames) The Fiero in my opinion was a compromise that didn't make a great commuter car or a sports car. I think that the Fiero has tremendous potential but the beauty of the Fiero comes more in looks and imagination. The power plant, suspension and brakes could use a lot of help, but help is available. I think that stock Fiero's where a work in progress that was never complete not even in the 88 models. The Fiero is a sporty looking car that provides a bit of the feel of a sports car and the potential to be one. What I find funny is that so long as we are the only ones pointing out the deficits of out Fiero's its ok but no one else can have a negative opinion, because they then would be "ignorant", "they don't know what the **** they are talking about"

Lets be a bit realistic here and admit to ourselves that the Fiero is far from perfect but it provides a great platform for improvements at a reasonable cost.

I had a Fiero catch fire once when my friend and I were towing it. We left the ebrake on (hey the car was wrecked up front so we didnt think about it) and about 3 miles down the road we heard an explosion, pulled over and the rotor was glowing hot and the hoses were all on fire.

My 88gt burned to the ground last year. I was driving her up a small hill, when I looked back all I could see were flames...

I miss her.

My fiero started smoking twice, but not truely flaming and no damage.

The first time I had left the engine vents off for a couple of weeks while it sat and I worked on it. Lots of pinestraw fell down onto the exhaust sys. and started to burn, luckily it was still in the driveway, and I got the pinestraw out. That was a stupid mistake that won't be repeated.

The second time it appears that the anti freeze leaked from coolant hose and smoked or evaporated. I haven't fixed it yet, but I have a clutch to fix first.

Hey a 300 dollar car is bound to have its problems. Plus it was from a police auction so I can assume it wasn't well maintained.
