I finally found a 86 fiero in my area has every factory option (according to the owner) and has been stored every winter *bonus*! I does have the 2.8 w/77k but the only thing that is keeping me from buying it is that it is a 4 speed. I had my heart set on a 5 speed because I'll be doing conversion down the line when the 2.8 kicks it.

Now I'm wondering how much work would it be to swap a 5 speed in (if I find one) and is there any little things that I would have to worry about by doing this.

Thanks~~~

I'm going through this very situation right now.

Here's what I DO know:

*The five speed Getrag is in reality a Muncie transmission

*A Fiero Getrag (Muncie) should bolt right in to replace the four speed

There are FWD versions of the Getrag (Muncie) that can be installed in the Fiero, but require some additional work. Visit Rodney Dickmans' website HERE
He sells components to assist in the installation of FWD Getrags. It seems the primary hangups are in the shift linkage and cable brackets. He also mentioned in his article at the site above something about the speed sensor.

*While I haven't recieved any confirmation one way or another, I assume (yeah, I know, I know) that the shifter assembly needs to be replaced. Being that the four speed shifter is regulated by the transmission, I wondered if it wasn't possible to modify the four speed shifter, but I'm thinking that probably won't work. I've put out feelers here to obtain a shifter, but so far no one has made any offers.

Hope this at least gets you started in the right direction.

The getrag is an actual getrag. It was designed in germany. The only reason people assume it is a muncie is because it was built in the old GM muncie facility. But according to all of GM's official records and data the trans is a true getrag.

**Information obtained via GM manufacturing / production records.

Thanks for the conversion info... I checked on Rodney's Fiero Accessories page and read what I would need to do it... I'll keep the 4 speed while keeping an eye out for a Getrag 5 speed in the local bone yards.

Now I have a quick q about the 4 speed that it comes with: on a flat surface how far can you take the 1st and 2nd gears in mph??
