so much for a trunk! there's not even room for the "Three grocery bags" as advertised! I think the power would be sweet as hell, but what about handling loss? Just swapping to a 3.4 shifts the weight balance to 45/55, unless it's an aluminum block and heads, I'd be worried about some serious push in the corners... maybe if you stcuk a bag of cement mix in the hood and some heavier springs....

I doubt that the above car was built to do anything but go fast in a straight line. I could live with that though.

looks like the old caddy eldorado(I think eldo) setup. That had to be a fun install.

If you've never seen one, it uses the motor with a tranny that u turns on itself. The diferential ends up, I think, on the left side of the block. the right half shaft passes under the oil pan.

In the caddy I think it was a 350-400cid enigne. (It's been years since I saw one.) I think the tranny, gear wise, was about the same as a TH350 with a high 2.x:1 or low 3.x:1 diferential. The engine tranny package sits nearly dead center over the axle.

This would be a really good case for a strut tower brace on a fiero.

We saw a Corvair with an Olds 350 and that style transaxle at a car show last Sunday. It was a pretty cool install. Makes me want one in my car. How bad is the handling?

I'm assuming it's the extra weight that causes any adverse handling problems. Those Riveria, Toronado, Caddy transaxles are heavy not to mention the 455 engine or whatever is heavier than a small block Chevy. Also, some of the weight is transferred farther rearward as evidence of the need to remove the truck. Yep, this Fiero is way tail heavy for anything much more than drag racing. I like the pic showing it lifting the front paws up.

Can you balance the car? Kind of like a racing gokart ? Adding weights where they are needed? Or is it like walking backwards to add weight to a fiero.

Theogre is right, one of the axles passes right under(through) the oil pan. So you have half the engine plus all of the tranny behind the axle centerline making this one tail happy ride. It just wouldn't be practical for anything but straight line performance.

This is the engine tranny combo I mentioned a few months ago where you could install 2 drivetrains in a car. 2 V8's and all-wheel drive.
I can see the cruise night conversation now.
"Hey, nice ride, whats it got?"

"OOOOHHH, just 16 cylinders, AWD, 1002 cubic inches and 1100 lbs of torque....wanna race??"

The teacher that gave me that magazine also had a hot rodder mag with a new northstar caddy in it.
He had one of the north star engines up front and one in the back.He said it was a 600+HP caddy.

Becasue of the excessive weight involved in this conversion, I was curious; is this Fiero picture showing the car at a standstill? Or, are we seeing the car actually accelerating? My guess the car is parked and is undrivable due to the front wheels unable to controll direction.

I question some of this conversion but I read the whole article and believe the handeling is still decent because the entire rear suspension was replaced by that of the car the engine came from, and upgraded, which is similar to that of a corvette. And i hear those handle pretty decent with their heavy engines. lol

Hugh,
Did you install PIP? If you did then it should be in your "programs" menu. If you just downloaded it and didn't install it then your guess is as good as mine where your computer put it.
As for remembering your password, just click on "preferences" on the top of any page and then click "remember password". One of your cookies probably got deleted or corrupted.

Thanks for sending the pictures, Hugh. That's one impressive piece of machinery!

I'm curious about one-of-a-kind vehicles like yours- Is this car ever driven on the street, or is it used only for display purposes in car shows?

Boy did I screw that one up.I used the car on and off for about a year.I put it in shows for a few years until I got tired of being screwed by the show organizers. It got out standing engineered for the show at the 1991 World of Wheels in Philadelphia,PA.
