Ok I just bought a very plain 4cyl 1988 Fiero Coupe...no extras just basics...
I read that electrical troubles were Fieros most prevalent problem....And true to form its has already started 3 days after my purchase....
The first trouble i saw was that the right Blinker lite on the Dash stayed on ...(generally i sigh of bad bulb or short)...The Rear Tail lights all seem fine....but the Right front Blinker was only firing one filament...making it noticable dimmer....Switching bulbs made no difference...
I let this slide since it still worked but withing 5 days of buying the Radio stopped...(The Green LED screen is blank)....OK I figure fuse.....But meantime I notice that the 2 bulbs that lite up under dash on both sides go OFF when door is open....Yet Come ON when closed...AND DONT go off at all with doors closed...keys out not running....SIGH I pulled the 2 bulbs so that my battery would not run down.....
Sooooooo at this point i check the fuses....All seemed fine but one....Said Hazard Light next to it...25amp....(My hazard lites blink as well as blinkers just the dim front left bulb...) So i stick a fuse in...POOF....i stick another in POOF.....I blew 3 fuses instantly...so i left it out.....
So am I really screwed?...I know very little about my little Fiero except that I love it and it runs great.....YET I am terrified that the electric systems are screwed up and likely very costly to track down.....
If any one can help I would be appreciative of ANY thing I may try....(I miss radio... and tape deck works but poorly)
One question I have is....When the 4 way flashers are on....do the front blinkers go from side to side while flashing? Mine does...although back lights all blink simultaneously.? is this normal...may help me diagnose to know....
desparate new owner...

Wow, GTBastard, that was a low blow (so why IS he a junior member?)

Ya think maybe his little Fiero has a misplaced front midline actuated wiring displacement?

I'm not helping a bit, am I?

(actually, drquazar, it sounds like a heck of a bad wiring job by somebody!)

ok - no more suspense -- you are a junior member until you have posted ten messages (I think that's right) -- as for the wiring - yep, yur screwed!!..........

not to panick tho -- you could find a Haynes manual with the wiring diagrams and check the continuity on your wiring - i'll bet you'll find a wire or two crossed with another...........

Work back from the front running lights' harness since that has a problem for sure. This sounds like a direct short to ground so hopefully it won't be inside the harnes but at one end or the other. If it's in the middle of the harness there may be an obvious worn spot in the conduit.

Then again, the reversed action of the jamb switch should be corrected first, and may even end the search.

Sure do wish electricity could be seen.

dr,

Just worked through a similar problem with Hoop. The socket in the rear of the front lights will have three wires going into them. There will be a blue, brown and black. The blue and brown go together and enter into the rear of the socket. The black wire enters the side of the socket. The problem is that the black wire is not grounded. The connector will be broken.

A test: Pull the front sockets. Turn the blinkers on(which ever direction doesn't work). Pull the black wire from the socket. Ground the socket (where the black wire was) to the frame. Your blinker should work.

Good Luck,
matt

For the interior light and radio problem check the link below. Under articles and troubleshooting there is a page on "gremlins". There is an explanation of how a blown fuse can cause wierd things to happen between the radio and inside lights.

Good luck.
