After many e-mails to the NHTSA, I finally got a copy of the crash test tabulations for the Fiero, and many other vehicles. It is in Microsoft Excel format, for those of you interested, I could e-mail you a copy, but you have to have Excel, or a compatible.
This is part of a message:
"We tested an 84 Fiero in the frontal impact. It received a 5 star rating for both the passenger and driver. The vehicle was not side impacted. Side impact testing was not conducted at that time."
So much for the comments I have heard that claimed that the Fiero was rated 5 star for front, side, and rear impact.
There were no cars that received those ratings in 1984, since they did not test for those collisions at that time. It is true, however, that it is remarkably crash resistant. In reviewing the data, one column indicates deformation, and the Fiero had 5%, which was the lowest of all the cars listed. I am assuming that this is compartment deformation.
The spread sheet has several columns that do not mean anything to me, and I think the NHTSA people are sick of me! If anyone knows what the various headings are, I would be interested in feedback.
TIA,
Mike
