When I rebuilt my engine on my 85 SE v-6 4spd I also replaced the axels and transmission axel seals. The right seal tapped right in with no trouble. I had a time getting the left seal in. It was very tight and I damaged two before I got one seated properly.

When I got the engine back in and filled the trans with oil it had a slight drip from the left axel seal. It looked like it was leaking between the seal housing and the trans case. I noticed that I did not get it tapped in flush with the trans case.

I replaced it and got the new one seated flush but is leaks also.

Ed Parks suggests using a red locktite that is used to seals up transmission cases after rebuilds on the seal when I replace it again.

Any thoughts on this? The drip is slow but when I get home on the weekends there is a trail of oil on the floor from this drip.

I would apply some non-harding type of sealer around the outer lip of the seal where it meets the case, and tap it in squarely with a wooden block...hope it dries up for ya....

if the leak really is the seal seat in the tranny case...... and it could be, all it takes it a scratch in the seat.

try coating the seat area with some Permatex Super 300 or "Aviation" sealer. Clean the seat with solvent and let it dry before painting on the sealer. let the car sit overnight after the seal is in. These sealers set pretty quick but you want it to dry good in this case.

These sealers are both paint on type.you only need a thin layer of it. they will also lube the seat a bit as you drive the seal. neither sealer will leave boogers that could get loose in the tranny.
