The Escort based 2 seat was the EXP version. It had all the same problems as regular Escort, namely the propencity to break timing belts and whack the vavles.
There is also the Probe which initally came out around 86 I think. Probe was imported by Ford as I recall. Or maybe just it's drive train was.
The probe when first introduced was supposed to replace the Mustang, but the lovers of the mustang threw a fit because they didnt want a front wheel drive mustang!
Or a mustang with a 4cyl engine. (3.0L V6 wasn't introduced to the Ford Probes until 1990 or 1991)
The mustangs eventually got 4cyl engines.. I know a guy who has one. Ford 4cyls aren't that impressive in a mustang. in a Probe (lighter) they were ok, if I recall correctly..
I bought one of those stinking EXP's back in 85. What a dog. It never ran right and the only time I ever raced anything, it was a 2M4 a friend of mine owned. He smoked me. Another horror story was, Me and my brother in law were on our way back from a Bengals-Steelers game in 1988. All of a sudden, the EXP snapped a timing belt and we were stranded on the interstate, just outside Cincinnati. He laughed as I went out and started hitchhiking to use a phone. The reason he thought is was so funny was, I still had my game gear on with my face painted orange with black stripes. I got it fixed and I did end up driving it to Miami for Super Bowl XXIII. The Bengals lost that game to the 49er's and it sure was a long drive back to Ohio. Luckily, we had no mishaps and made it back. I swore the next 2 seater I bought was a Fiero. It was.

Are you thinking of the ford SHOgun? It was a mid-engined version of the festiva platform, I belive. I know Jay Leno has one. It's a pretty mean little car. It weighed almost nothing, and had a honkin V6 to get it going.

The Probe wasn't supposed to replace the Mustang, just supposed to be a supplement. It was geared towards the female buyer. Softer lines, smaller motor, etc. If I remember correctly, the female to male buyer ratio is something like 12:1.
I traded in my EXP for the good ol' Formula. There is quite a difference in everything! All that the exp was was an escort with a 1.9L HO motor and the back seats were taken out. It looks like a little sport ute in the back. Great system car. BAD (AS IN HORRIBLE) Sports Car. It also shared the rear deck lines with the 5.0 Stang. The probe replaced the EXP in 1988.
The value of an 88 EXP loaded is $500 compared to a loaded formulas value of 2 or 3 grand.
My EXP went through motors, alternators, starters, tires, hoods (REALLY), and other misc. parts (timing belt, radio, etc...). NEVER WILL I BUY A FORD 2 SEAT CAR AGAIN.
The exp was made out of alunimum so that it took a long time to rust. I never did get any rust on mine, but did notice it had a very "soda" can like feeling to it. It was extremly top heavy and could roll easily under a hard turn. I would give this car a 3 out of 10.
And I would give my Fiero a 10 out of 10.
BTW, The 1987 Cavalier Z24 was the EXPs competion. Even the Iron Duke would crush an EXP on the street.
The Fiero V6,Formula, Se V6, and GT seem to have had more in common with the mustangs v6&v8, firebirds, camaros, and corvetes then with the EXP, Z24, Probe 4cyl, and mustang 4cyl crowd.
Sorry for the long post

I actually had a 87 EXP in 1990. I bought it with 60k and ran it to 150k. Not 1 single break down. I did keep up regular maintanence and ran Mobil 1 every oil change. I had good luck w/ mine. I didn't get my 1st Fiero until 1996...
Probe? seat 4? God, you must have been a really small kid or something...... the car is so small I always thought it was a 2 seat. And people thought Pinto rear seat was cramped.

My dad got the Probe when I was 8, so yeah. I was pretty small then. No way I'd ever fit in the back seat of one now tho. I'd probably find it cramped in the front!
Best I've seen is 5 people in a Beretta. I was in the middle.. wouldn't want to try that in anything smaller!

The best I've seen is 10 in a 1954 Ford. At the time, we "only" had 8 kids in our family. We used to argue over who got to lay on the rear window deck, above the back seat! The traffic safety people would have gone nuts. Four people in front (the baby in Mom's lap), six kids in back. It was crowded, but it was fun. We used to go for Sunday afternoon drives (that was entertainment back then), and (I hate to admit this- sounds to much like an old Disney movie) singing songs on the way home. Enough of the rosey nostalgia. My brother-in-law had an exp. I think he spent more on keeping that piece of crap running than he did on my sister. Maybe that's not fair. I probably spend more on my Fiero than I do on my wife! Not the same, though. She's low maintenance (my wife, that is), and has her own income. Alright, this book has gotten long enough. Sorry for the ramble. Mike

Okay... We crammed nine people in a friends 68 Camaro SS. (This was in 73 or 74.) Would have worked out fine, except he had air shocks and "steamroller" tires on the back. Every time we'd hit a bump the rear fenders would eat up the sidewalls. He had to max out the airshocks just to keep it from chewing up his tires. He claims to have stuffed 11 people in there, later in the day. I sure hope they all liked one another.
