I havent got a tune up on my 87GT yet, not sure when the last tune up was. Are they really important? or can I hold off a few months yet? any performance from a tune up? Thanks!!

A tune-up is always a good idea. I just gave my '87 GT one, and there was a definite difference. I think most of it was the fuel filter though, because it had been sitting for a very long time before I bought it. Don't forget to get it timed properly too. The plugs and wires were not bad, it just took a little over a 1/2 hour to do. I'm sure you could let it slide for a few months, but why wait? It doesn't cost much to do, and you just might notice a little performance regained, especially if it's been awhile.

I've been thinking of getting a tune up also. Does anyone know what they would change/replace/check besides the spark plugs? Since I have bought my 86 SE in June I have not had a tune up. Some places advertise $20 for a tune up, but I'm assuming they only change the plugs. Some other places advertise $80, but I'm not sure what they should check.

Kornholio.. Definitely get the fuel filter replaced. It's a cinch on the 4bangers, and wasn't even that bad on my V6 GT. Might as well check the EGR system and the pcv valve while your at it. Get a good shop manual. Also, check to make sure your vacuum lines are in good shape. The ones in my V6 were pretty well cracked in some places.

Heard from my father that the V6's love new plugs, was going to find some surface fire plugs for mine if I wind up using it much.
I'd also avoid caps/rotors with aluminum contacts, they burn out much faster than the brass ones, and you're probably better off with slightly worn brass than new aluminum(will still last longer).
