I have had lots of leaks on this fiero and i am trying to get them all sorted out. I have spent allot of time scraping and cleaning the years of crud off so i can see where the oil is coming from. So I replaced both output shaft seals put it back together added oil. After a few minutes of cleaning up i noticed it was already leaking oil. Since i have everything relatively clean I thought tracking would be simple but the oil seemed to appear from nowhere. So I think this might be a crack in the transmission. The pic is of the driver side axle right where it is going into the transmission taken from under the car. Is this a crack if so is there any way to weld it or fix it some how? Is this common or what would have caused it if it is a crack? Thanks for any help.

Hard to tell if it is a crack or just a scrape mark from something. Good thing is the transmission doesn't have any pressure in it so if it is a crack you may be able to patch it fromt he outside with somethign like JB weld or shoe goo. You would need to drain the oil down below the crack and then really clean it up good first. Larry

I was hopeing somthing like jb weld would work I already drained it and hit it with some brake cleaner. I am going to try and sand the area a little and put some jb on it to night. Thanks for the reply.

Got the axle out deffenitly cracked. where it looks like its gouged its actually dented in creating a small shelf. something got caught between the axle and case. I am starting to see why i got this car for $400. I thought it was because the wrecked front end.
Do you think JB weld will hold up with it being dented in? Its about a 3" crack.

I think it will work OK, I know it may seem strange, but you should just take about an 1/8 drill and drill a hole through the case at each end of the crack. A tiny amount of aluminum may fall into the gearbox but it won't hurn anything. This will stop the crack from spreading. I would wire bursh up the area really good after cleaning it with laquor thinner or alchol. You shold leave it setting with the oil drained a day or so before you try to clean it so that oil doesn't wick out and mess things up. I bet it will work perfect. Larry

i agree with drilling the holes at the ends of the crack and the cleaning, i would also scar the surface with something aggressive to give the jb more surface to bond to

Stop holes are really important, even if you were going to weld it up you should first drill stop holes at the crack ends. This also works for body panels as well. Then do the weld or filling with whatever you are going to patch it with, you will be surprised at how well this works in stopping the spread of cracks. Larry
