Hey Guys, I'm interested in swapping the 3 speed automatic transmission in my 86 GT for a 4-speed. I've found a 1992 buick regal transmission with 65K miles on it. I've read that the Pontiac 6000 axles are a direct fit using a 4T60 transmission from another brand of car. Do you think they would work with this one? Are there better choices? I'm trying to get a good idea of what I may be getting into before jumping into the pot. Thanks!

use the search function on this site or on google, type in 4T60 or 4T60 fiero swap and youi'll see pretty much everything you need. I'm in process of the same swap and there are a number of little things to watch for. 1992 could be either 4T60 or 4T60e better first make sure which it is.

cheapest prices I found for 1989 pontiac 6000 axles was O'reilly's or partsgeek.com. partsgeek shipping was super fast and core cost was only $5. Oreilly's core price is $15.

Thanks for the information. What is your average mileage per gallon of gas? Was the swap worth it in your opinion? I think I'm getting around 20 mpg currently with the 3 -speed, which makes it a little impractical to drive. One other issue that i have not seen alot on is how to lift the car body high enough to slide the cradle out. i' m very mechanical, but do not have a proper car lift. any ideas? I'm hoping for a significant improvement! Thanks.

For best MPG you're looking for one with the 2.84 granny gearing. You'll need a tranny shop or GM dealer help you decipher the code on the tranny. If you're 2.8 is running right people have reported from low to upper 30's using the 4T60. I'm hoping my 3.4 will do upper 20's to low 30's with my 2.84.
there are lots of ways to get the motor out you just need to use the search function to look for builds.

The transmission codes are available at gmtuners.com in the tech info section.
There is a tag on the side of the trans to the right of the dipstick tube. If it is missing a tear down will allow determining the differential ratio. The ranges are the same.

Hi All, I went ahead an bought the Regal transmission. It was the last year before the 4T60E was used. My problem is that they crushed the car before I could get the TCC connector and it seems like there are not many of the older cars left in local junkyards in south Florida. Would it be possible to convert the connector to something more mainstream by soldering connections to the 5-prong connector on the transmission case? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks carbon! I've been all over the web and never ran across that. Does the male plug fit directly into the plug on the transmission, or do I need to replace that one with the one that comes with the kit?
