3M and I know you dont want to lose your investment on the freeway, some 100% Black silicone on the inner or outer edges of the 3M tape (no caulking or caulking blend,it has the consistancy of clay and wont hold up).You may need a 2x4 to hold the window in place.

If the linked threads do not answer the question, why and "how to" a 2X4 ? Also, if the linked threads or product directions do not address curing/wait for use time, is immediate use possible ? I hope to do it at a Fiero gathering show and shine/cruise.

Cliff, I don`t know about other 3-M tapes but I used the one that Jim is selling, a while back, and I used 3-M adhesive remover to remove the old residue, then isopropyl alcohol to clean the surfaces just before sticking the tape in place. The tape above upon first applying has a 60% hold rate and within, I think about 48 hours, reaches 100% hold. But that stuff has such a good hold rate that even at 60% those windows aren`t coming off. As I said, similar tape may work the same. Just get it as close to 120mil as you can because that is close to 1/8" which is about what the original was. Mike

Will this 3M adhesive remover work to remove old dried on tape from new OEM quarter windows that have been in storage for several years. Will it damage the plastic? Specifically what is this stuff called and where do you buy it?

Here are the actual steps I took that I sent to people when I sold the tape I had. Mike
QUARTER WINDOW INSTALLATION I only added this because I read a source for installing these windows and was successful in following it. You may or may not have a better method or one that has worked for you. I tried the fishing line method for removing my windows, but was not successful at it, so I ended up breaking my old ones. I used a small plastic ice scraper to remove the old tape, as a metal scraper would gouge the paint and leave the surface unstable. The article I read said you could use wood as a scraper as well. After that I used 3M #08984 solvent for removing the residue. I followed this with a cleaning of 50/50 Isopropyl alcohol and water. Don`t use rubbing alcohol. I failed to mention that all of this should be done in temperatures above about 80 degrees. Install the tape onto the car. Before I pulled the plastic liner off of the tape I held the windows up to see about where they were lining up and found that if I held my windows up against the drip edge, they were about right. Once you stick them onto the tape they are stuck. The guy I talked to at 3M said that you could pull the liner off and then put the 50/50 water alcohol mixture on and stick the windows on before it dried and you could move them around to line them up and that as it dried it would sort of suck the windows into the tape, but I installed them dry. The 3M guy said that full 100% adhesion takes about 48 hours to happen, but considering when you first install the tape it`s about 65% and the strength is about 50 lbs/in I drove my car at highway speeds within an hour and had no problems.

By the way Cliff, if you are planning on putting your windows on at Round-up I can bring that 3-M adhesive remover, as I only used a little bit. I will look tonight. It should be in one of the boxes I have from when I moved. Mike

You may not need the 2x4,because the 3m tape will hold it in place, while the silicone dries. I used a 2x4 for some reason...I can't remember why (you shouldnt need it).I would wait about an hour, but technically the 3m tape should hold it in place while it dries. It will dry faster in the sun.

That would be great Mike, thanks. Yeah, I have brand new factory quarters in the boxes, and some Ms Lori reproductions she deemed not good enough. They look good to me. I would have installed them and given them some cure time but I thought I would let all at the Round-Up see and compare the differences.

Ouch ! $89.77 a roll. 36 yards. I need like five(?). Oh well. I got north of $600.00 in the windows and do not want tape costing $4.95 holding them on. Though, a tube of ...

From the forum help/links, you can find out where it is available in your area from 3M, at (800) 364 3577. 3M might even be able to advise you if your tape might still be good. If not, I will sell you some, . Again from this thread's links, the 3M adhesive remover you are looking for is ...

The general idea is to remove as much of the foam tape that is still sticking to the mounting surface as you can. How well you remove the old foam tape, using the wooden scrapper, will determine how much of the 3Mâ„¢ General Purpose Cleaner #08984 will be required to remove the remaining adhesive and small pieces of foam.
cliffw, headed to look under the couch cushions for spare change, and check the "she money account" (money she don't know about, ).

Go to the GM logo, click and then left column, I think it was in the clips or fasteners tab. I remember the tab opened up 12 pages of product. You'll need to scroll through to find the 2 different sizes. Very cheap compared to some prices I've heard of.
