87 duke 5-speed makes a strange clunking noise when engaging/disengaging the clutch from a stand still into 1st gear, from 1st, and into 2nd, but it wont do it under any other circumstances, even if I'm trying to duplicate it at highway speeds. It's pretty hard to tell where it's coming from since it only happens when taking off, but it sounds like the right rear area of the car. IIRC, there was a topic a while back and someone isolated a similar problem to their water pump. i just put in a new masterpro water pump and the clunking remains. Something i have noticed is the rubber "boot" at the right hand rear axle behind the wheel/tire is torn. Could that be a possibility since it obviously wouldn't be able to stay lubricated, since it would sling out any grease almost immediately?

I might as well change them. From what i can see, they should be pretty straightforward to change. However does anyone have any pointers/guide? Vehicle specific, i think i remember seeing some info once but it was confusing as to automatic vs manual transmissions and part numbers. My local O'reilly's and Auto Zones seem like they are all new hires and aren't always the most helpful when looking up parts.

its all fairly straight forward, you'll need something to pry the trans around while you line up the bolts on the mount. if you're a small guy you probably wont even need to jack the car off of the ground ... i didn't.

Just make sure they are bad before you change them. You should be able to jack the engine up a little and see a rip in the mounts.
