I am in the process of replacing my oil pan seal/gasket in a 84. Had this car since I ordered it, has 44,000 original miles and have noticed some oil leaks in the past several months. I have read several posts on 85's and higher and all the issues involved with removing the oil pan. Before I begin would like to know what exactly will need to be removed to gain access to the oil pan. Exhaust pipes?
I purchased an Oil Pan Gasket Set from the Fiero Store.....is this a good choice or should I just use RTV as the factory did? I want to make sure I am not repeating this process yearly. The more I read the more confused I am becoming about sealants/gaskets? Help....... Thanks.

I did this on an '88 and on my '87. In both cases I dropped the exhaust and unbolted the engine mount(s) and raised up the engine with a 4x4 (across the strut towers) and a chain.
It isn't bad to do this work, if you have a manual tranny, but both of mine were autos.... a little tighter in there.
I used RTV on both with great success. I would recommend RTV made especially for exposure to oil (valve covers/oil pans, etc). I let it cure overnight before starting.

When I dropped the pan on my 84, I jacked up the engine (using a 2x4 across the oil pan to spread the load) enough to remove the engine mount. The I put a piece of 2x4 between the front pulley and the cradle to support the engine when I moved the jack out of the way.
I used a gasket, because the P.O. had already bought it but hadn't installed it.
