I'm getting ready to get back to work on the Fiero in the spring..
I was reading on the proper operation of the EVAP system for my 3800SC engine.
I was wondering if there is any issues with looking for a newer charcoal canister for the Fiero? any possible replacements? I'm thinking that the activated charcoal in the canister for the last 25+ years must be pretty much done...
Any ideas what replacements would work best? What would look good in the Fiero as well.. I want it to look like it “belongs” there. I didn’t think of keeping the canister for the GTP donor car, so it’s gone with the car. My bad.. .

I don't think the charcoal is the issue, but the filter element does become dirty over time. I ordered replacement filter elements from Rock Auto and had them installed in my evaporation canister. While you're at it, check the EVR valve function, since that is an easy but overlooked service item. bb

So pretty much any canister from a newer car then?
Does the size matter? I'f a get a large one from a truck or a tiny one I can hide? Is there any specifications I need to follow at all?
Cheers!
Yes,but when I baught my evap canister from the wrecking yard, quite a few have a metal piece on the bottom (The metal Tang,on the Fiero support frame can be bent down,if needed for better clearance), so it would be a good Idea to measure the width and height of the Fiero canister or measure the circular support frame,if you dont have the canister.
20+ years old? is not a problem by old age. No fuel smell likely means charcoal is fine. Fiero can get sun light and that can eat the plastic. Canister can get poison w/ liquid fuel. (One reason why you should never Stuff the tank.)
many new units purge are ECM/PCM control. Purge valve lives could be anywhere... on engine, body, etc. Fiero 1 vac line to purge and 1 vac line to open purge valve on can. Yes, You can use the wrong purge type/plumbing and have big problem.
Fiero EVAP can is used by millions of GM cars and trucks. Likely get used ones cheap or free.
EVAP is higher then the tank and fill plumbing to stop siphon if liquid fuel soak the can from stuffing the thank.

I have a Gen V blower on my L32 with an EVAP solenoid on the supercharger. My understanding is when that solenoid is triggered, the vacum sucks fumes from the canister into the blower and eventualy gets burned. So I would need a canister with no purge valve then right? Or can the Fiero canister be made to work with my setup?
For the newer EVAP to function properly you need both solenoids plus the in tank pressure sensor so unless you plan to drill a hole in your tank or filler tube to hold the sensor I would just stick with the older style charcoal canisters and if concerned replace the filter within the canister. Dan

I was under the impression that you can "tune out" the pressure sensor portion of the EVAP system. The EVAP will still function but would not report a fuel tank pressure problem.
