Hey Guys,

This motor was a replacement 2.8L

Wondering what the method is for adjusting the shift cables on this 4-speed?

Everything works fine except that the reverse lights won't stay on.
When I put the car in reverse and push the shifter to the left, they come on but as soon as I let go, they shut off.
Does this mean the cable needs adjustment or is there something else wrong?

The reverse light switch for a four speed is on the shifter itself.

OK, so that means any adjustment to it will need to happen underneath the center console?
Its there and it works but it just seems out of reach of the shifter location.

Yes... the adjustment is under the center console. If I recall correctly, there is a small screw on the end of the plastic switch plunger to adjust the plunger's effective length.

Perfect - Thanx!

I will dig around.
Just thought since it used to work right on the old engine and now doesn't work right on the new, I may have just had something out of adjustment

Cheers

It is possible that there's a bit less travel in the shifter since the swap that's causing the issue, but if you're not having any problems getting into gear, best to try what Bloozberry suggested. No sense taking a chance of mucking up something else!

I have the same problem.

Theres a detent roller in there that's supposed to hold the shifter to the left when you put it into reverse, to engage the reverse light switch.

Even after an adjustment using the screw provided, I was not able to keep my reverse lights on. The detent roller or one of the springs must have weakened in age, and prevents it from holding.

If you find a solution I would love to hear about it.
