Came across this site that shows GM Engine and Transmission details, specs, pictures etc. This is a great reference for owners trying to decide what engine swaps to do. Notice that the 3500 and 3.6L engines seem to have replaced the 3800 series, The LZ4 makes 219 HP stock. Not bad for N/A. The 3.6L V-6 3.6L V-6 VVT (LY7) makes 252 HP@251 ft lbs torque. That's better than an L67. Maybe one day soon we will see more swaps with these engines but the VVT and the electronic throttle control may require a work around.

The list is for most of the more recent GM engines. I don't believe that most people want to consider a swap and have useless information on a 1957 vintage 283 engine.

What I'd like to know is: what is the "Purpose "for the big plastic covers on top of all the different make engines ??? Just to make it more of a pain to work on ?! Or IS THERE a REAL reason for them ? keep Heat in ?

Noise reduction. Most of these covers have insulation glued to them to dampen normal engine noise (like injector clicks and such). You wouldn't believe what prospective new car buyers and new car owners complain about when it comes to the "normal" noises a car makes.

The Northstar makes a symphony of mechanical noises that GM wants you never to hear...

They want it to look neat when you open the hood in the showroom.

I disagree. While my sample size is not complete, I have never pulled one of these covers off and seen any form of insulation on one of these covers. The only purpose they serve is decoration. Same reason so many cars today have covers over the battery - it's decorative, but not functional.

I'd say those engine covers are for asthetics, easy engine identity and for noise reduction. All modern engines have them but they don't fit well on most Fiero swaps

It is a good list of engines being used by GM still today Thanks. Older engines info and pics would also be nice to have but this is still very helpful. Again thanks Dan

Do you have anything to offer this forum except complaints? Instead of whining like a small spoiled child; why don't you contribute something and come up with an engine list that you feel better suits the needs of the Fiero community. If you do this then people will derive value in what you post. Without contributing anything positive you're just a bag of hot air that contributes nothing. .

hmm, I make a simple statement that your link doesn't cover a very broad array of engines, you fire back a smartass comment... what did you expect? Don't dish out what you can't take.

one thing that is nice, with all you people swapping out your OEM engines, I can buy an entire 2.8L V-6 for less money than I can buy an alternator for my DD
I am beginning to wish I had an auto transmission, I can buy two 2.8L V-6's WITH auto transmissons for the price of one Getrag that probably needs overhauling
in fact if I do any swapping, it will be getting rid of the Getrag in favor of an auto
any takers?

I'd almost pay you to come take the Auto I just pulled out of my Indy. It's only missing second gear

The list that I posted here contains good info on most of GM current engine offerings. I am "dishing out" good stuff and trying to be helpful. OK, so here is your opportunity to tell us all what YOUR contribution has been to this post to make it better? From what I read here you are just posting worthless information.
