Only getting 20mpg right now, one of the things that I wanted to look over, is the EGR system (new to me) on my Duke. I tried the search function, found only 3 threads searching EGR DUKE, and that didnt help.
So, how do I check the EGR itself, and the stuff related to it.

There are two ways to check. A hand vacuum pump can easily do it. Just suck a vacuum on the egr valve and if it moves up and stays up then it works. The other way is not so reliable but its a quick check. reach under the egr and push it up and then put your finger over the hole and see if it goes back down. If it doesn't then it good. If it does then its bad. If the egr checks good then check the vacuum going to egr valve. Somebody will have to chime in that part.

1. Won't work... OE ERG is Negative Back-pressure setup. This will always fail. 2. same thing, same problem.
May work on some aftermarket EGR.
Cut a small square piece of pop can to temporally block EGR. Slip piece between intake manifold and EGR casket from TBI side.

Ogre, I'm reading the link you posted now. One problem though, the fuel vapor recovery canister in my car is simply not there. How does this affect what I'm doing for diagnostic reasons, and how the car runs?

still check lines/ports are capped.
Delete EVAP can doesn't affect MPG but safety... see Emissions
No cat. Is that a problem? One of the many things that was missing when I got the car. Thats why it took since May to get the car on the road. I've driven the car less than 200 miles since I got it. I just built an exhaust system for it. I used two mufflers on it. A 2" inlet/outlet where the cat goes, and a 2" single inlet, dual outlet where the muffler is supposed to go. I've got a dual exhaust on a 4 banger. All the joints are welded throughout the system, no leaks. Not to brag, but it came out really really nice, much better than I thought.
Another place you could have problems with the EGR is under the throttle body. When I took my TB off I found the passages on the intake manifold were blocked off with carbon build up. It sounds like you car has been " messed with " a lot and you may have a combination of disabled parts disconnected adding up to a loss in mileage.
