Just bought my first Fiero (88 GT w/ 5sp, I'm assuming Getrag). Drove it all of 42 miles before the clutch started slipping. Went to parts store, got new clutch set (Advance Auto Part No. MU59-1A, yes it's cheap). Pulled transmission, installed clutch, flywheel resurfaced. Now the damn thing won't shift with the engine running. Engine stopped, I can find all 5 gears without too much trouble (1st is a little sticky, but better than when I bought the car and it worked) and I can start in gear with the clutch in and the car doesn't move. Start the engine, can't get it to shift into 1,2, or R (can sometimes grab the upper gears if you fiddle with it) Bled clutch using gravity method (3 or 4 times now), checked banjo (was upside down, corrected), no leaks on either cylinder. There's a guy close by who's a Fiero expert (at least he does 3800SC swaps for a side job), he says the pedal feels soft but distance traveled looks good. We made a longer slave cylinder rod (about 1/4" longer), no change. Also, I realigned the cables at the start of this mess.

My question is, if per chance, I installed the clutch disc off center or backwards, would it cause this problem? Or should I just take it out and see what happens once I start driving (float the gears and such)? I ask because I was using a different type of alignment tool than I usually do, but I feel like I got everything right. Well, I did until I ruled everything else out....

Tex06,

Sure sounds like you are not getting enough throw at the slave pushrod, either from air in the circuit or from mechanical issues.

First, MEASURE the throw at the slave pushrod. If it is less than an inch the problem in not in the clutch.

Next check to see if the clutch pedal is about 1 inch higher than the brake. If it is not you must fix that...could be a bent clutch pedal or bent banjo. Seems likely since your banjo was upside down.

Next try pumping the clutch pedal. If it gets any better you have air in the circuit. Try the archie method or several other methods which include bleeding the slave.

G'Luck,

Larry
