I see a number of people are now using Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid for the 5-speed manual transaxle,
but I see the Haynes Repair Manual states that Dexron II ATF is also an option for the Manual transaxle 5-speed.

Is anyone using the Dexron II ATF in their manual transaxles?

Thanks for the help.

Which transmission (Isuzu or Getrag)?. I've only seen them take 5w-30 oil or synchromesh, with synchromesh being the better choice - never seen Dexron II before.

The automatic, of course, would take a Dexron II equivalent.

ATF means (automatic transmission fluid). Do NOT put that in a manual transmission.

You need GM synchromesh manual transmission fluid. That oil is about 13$ a litre at GM or an AC Delco outlet.

For the getrag transmission you need 1.9L so 2 bottles is enough.

There is a difference in the quality of the oil because of the additives GM requires for their transmissions.

That's the only tranny oil I use and will continue to use in my fieros.

Stop trusting Haynes manuals, they have been wrong more times than I can count. I, among many recommend the GM Fiero Factory service manual (for your year obviously)

I strongly recommend using Synchromesh. Makes all the difference. It's what GM recommends in their TSB as well.

I have an '87 and '88 Getrag.
I was planning on using the Synchromesh on the '87, but just saw the information on Dexron II ATF in the Haynes Repair Manual, top of page 1-2.

Yes I know what ATF means, that is why I was asking the question in the post, after I read it in Haynes.

They have Pennzoil Synchromesh in stock at AutoZone. Has anyone used it?

Try to get your hands on a service manual for your years then. Synchromesh is not that expensive, it's not worth reinventing the wheel. You're looking at maybe $18 for 2 quart containers, available just about everywhere.

Just FYI, some vehicles like the Ford Explorer and F-150 with manual transmissions use Mercon ATF. But the Fiero should not.

I had an 85 Dodge PU with a manual trans that had ATF in it from the factory. Never had a problem with it for 150+K. So it's not such a strange thing. Synchromesh is what you should use in the Fiero though

The original specification for the 5-speed transmissions in the Fiero was 5w30 engine oil or Dexron-II ATF. Later, a TSB was released changing the recommendation to Synchromesh oil. Any of these will work. But with the Synchromesh, the transmission will shift better.
