The wife bought a new CTS and has put almost 1,000 miles on it, so I'm ready to change the oil ( I always make the first change early to clean out any machining tailings, solvents, etc). The car calls for Dexos 1 oils.

I have been using Havoline for over 35 years without any oil issues, but they don't make Dexos 1 approved oil, so I'll probably switch over to Quaker State. Valvoline and Castrol would have also been considered. Anybody have any experience with this stuff? Would there be valvetrain benefits using it in older push-rod engines? Any other random thoughts besides associating it with Dexcool?

Just put in Mobil 1. You can't go wrong with Mobil 1, I run Mobil 1 0w-30 on the MINI Cooper S, never had any issues, even on a super short (0.7 mile) commute.

As the saying goes: No one ever got fired for buying IBM (or use Mobil 1 )

I believe Dexos is a full synthetic oil. I had it in a new truck. At my first oil chang e, 2000 mi., I used Mobil 1 5w-30. Mobil 1 does meet the Dexos standards, if you believe what the bottle says.

My wifes Traverse also called for Dexos, after some searching and talking with a couple of local mechanics they suggested Mobil 1. Do not use a regular motor oil or you will be damaging your catalytic converter. They mentioned to me that the Dexos oil was formulated to reduce some type of emissions and not damage converter but in the process is missing some of the better lubricating qualities of older oils or Mobil 1.
