Found a salvage yard with a 5-speed tranny outta an 86 4 cyl. I am ready to go get it, but wanted to check-in with some of you more experienced wrenchers.

This sounds like an easy swap. They have the shifter and the tranny. I assume I can use my existing cables. What should my concerns be before I commit.

Thanks for any help.

Ty

No.

And you'll have to change your slave.

And you'll have to re-wire your backup light switch.

And you will need the 5 speed throw out bearing, the original 4 speed clutch should be replaced- but will work with the 5 speed transmission.

Thanks, guys:

What about the 4 speed shift cables? Are they compatible with the 5?
What about the speedometer stuff. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Also, the 4-speed Muncie is a stronger unit than the 5-speed Isuzu.

If you're looking for better mileage, install a Fuel Smart computer. You should get around 16% improvement in mileage for $295 (If you install it yourself.) My youngest son is getting a 16% improvement in his 4-cylinder Honda Accord and my wife and I are getting a 20% and 22% mpg improvement in our 3.3L V6 Grand Caravans (Mine is a 2002 with 283K miles on it, hers is a 2006 with 140K miles on it.)

Incidently, a 20% improvement in MPG with gas at $3.00/gallon is the equivalent of 60 cents less per gallon.

Not in the case of the 84 4-speed. They had weak cases.

That wouldn't work on a Duke, Dukes only have one injector.

Maybe a better idea is to leave the 4-speed alone and swap the Duke for a V6. You'd have more performance (And, with the Fuel Smart, better mileage.)

I guess you can tell, I love my Fuel Smarts. They're saving me a good bit of change.
