What are the stock front speakers in an '85 GT? I've been searching and saw some posts that said they were 4x6 and others that say 4x10. I haven't been able to find 4x10 anywhere, but lots of 4x6 around. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just want to put new speakers in because the passenger front doesn't work at all. I found a pair of Pioneer 4x6 for $35 so wondering if they will fit.

i have always hated the sound from the 4x10, so i made plates out of fiberglass and got some 4x6's for the front they sound a lot better. i plan on redoing everything soon. a 13" jl aduio sub behind the pass. seat 4x6 plates in the rear and going with some 5 1/4s for the front with separate tweeters.

There are still NOS speakers available. They're the "performance sound" speakers, not the standard ones. The only difference I think is that these speakers are 2-way. I think people have them on ebay, but whoever it was, they're not expensive. I don't have the part number though.
There's surely better speakers out there but if you want stock impedance then these are a good option.

thats kind of true not true.. the speaker inpedance(load) changes with every hrz it "trys" to reproduce a 4 ohm speaker will show inpedance loads from as low as .2 of an ohm all the way to 28 ohm or higher depending on allot of things if all we played was a test wave then ya.. a 4 ohm speaker would be 4 ohms.. g.m. (amd others) used odd ohm rated speakers.. they really are not all that different.. it was a great way to get parts counter sales as most would go "oh, no one makes a x ohm speaker guess I'll go to the dealer." when people have problems is when they wire the speakers wrong.. with the say left side front hook up correctly and the rear one the wires reversed , and the oem radios that only have two channel amps. that will make your 2) 4 ohm speakers show the radios amp an "average load" of 8 ohms.. reverse one speakers wires ,by mistake and you just made the radios amp try to push an 1 ohm load.. not gonna happen for long,

Thanks everybody. Long term I'm going to go with the adapters and put the 5 1/4" in the front and probably replace my headrest speakers with something else. I got new Iggee seat covers recently and they muffle the sound from the headrest speakers and I can't yet bring myself to cut holes in them
For now I think I'm just going to rig up something to fit the 4x6" in the front, they are a good price and I'm assuming they will pair up decently with the Pioneer deck. Total price including all adapters and taxes is $208, all available off the shelf at WallyMart.
Is pulling the stock speakers out of the front a difficult job? Do the covers just pop off and remove them out the top? In the manual it 'sorta' looks that way, but there's something showing on one of the pegs that makes me a bit unsure.

I pulled the speakers out, and they were not the stock speakers as I thought. They had been replaced with new 4x9s, and instead of cutting off the stock connectors, they spliced the new wire in about 3" below the connectors and left them on just hanging there. I pulled the speaker off and tried it with a new section of wire and the speaker was fine. Cut off the wires just below the soldered area and put on new wires and everything is great. I'll probably now look for a spot for the 4x6 speakers in behind the seats. Maybe on the firewall ledge right behind the headrests?
