I am going to use PPG Deltron on my Fiero. There are several different formulas (DBC and DBU). The DBC uses a reducer and activator/hardener and the DBU uses a “reactive reducer.” Which would be best to use for an armature? I think the DBU would be easier since the mixing ration is 1:1.

I have painted a dozen cars using Delstar in the past. It’s been15 years since I have done a major project. I am looking to update what I the type of paint I am using. The car will be black. Any suggestions?

I dont like using PPG because its just too expensive for no reason. I have used Ditzler Delstar single stage, and it always turned out great. Is Delstar now avail as base/clear system too ? I dont know, their store here moved 30 miles away.

DBC and DBU are slightly different in the way they lay down with colors. DBU is the best overall base to use and I prefer it to anything else that's on the market. I've been spraying PPG Deltron DBU for 22 years. For changing the type of paint you spray the DBU sprays like lacquer and the clears spray like enamel. You shouldn't have any problems spraying the paint. The DBU mixing ratio is 1:1.5......1 part paint to 1.5 parts reactive reducer. When you get your paint make sure that you get your tech sheets with it. Which clear are you planning to use?

I don't agree with Roger that the PPG cost isn't worth it. I've been spraying for over 30 years and many different types of paint. The PPG Deltron is the best I've sprayed and I do believe that you get what you pay for. Yes, it's more expensive but it's top quality paint and materials. This is one of those areas where you do get what you pay for. I've been a GM dealership painter and a show car painter for many years and the paint quality between brands is enormous. Yes, you can get good results with cheaper stuff but it's a lot more work and cheaper paint doesn't last as long.

Good luck.....

I think Silkens is the best paint around. I use mostly SW and BASF. Both of those base colors spray like lacquer too, and the clear does spray like enamel. Its very easy to get runs if your not careful. Both of those only use reducer in the base, no catalyst. Catalyst is only in the clears with no reducers. ICI was another good one I liked till my store stopped carrying it due to prices. I just cant see PPG and costing $150+ for a quart of base color when I can use something I consider as good for $60-$75 a quart. Most base/clear failures is in the clear, rarely in the base. This is not to say its wrong if you use it, its just not what I prefer even on my own cars. Mark, your like me in that you just like what product you use. I have used everything at one time or another.

For me it's Sikkens (average cost around $800 just for paint), PPG (average cost around $600 just for paint), & for cheaper jobs (like my BMW) Dupont Nason (average cost around $300 just for paint). With paint you really do get what you pay for.
I don't care for base coats that use both a catalyst & a reducer. They usually give you problems with lifting around the edge if you later have to blend in the base over the clear.
And it's not that we like what we use, it's that we use what we like & get the best results & durability from.
