I think the early moldings and the late moldings are different. I just used a green kitchen scrub pad on my 88 moldings and it worked fine.

To look realy nice if their not damaged, I use something like Back to Black. Turtle Wax Ice (clear) does good too and dont leave any light color residue in the grain. You can also get by with vinyl protectant like you use on your dash and door panels. If there bad, I put a coat of Krylon BBQ black on them. I dont like putting another color on them because if they get bumped from another car door it will chip off.

If the black layer on them is still good, I wonder if plastX, plastic polish could be used?

Yes, but wouldnt go buy it just to do the trim. Other stuff listed will have just as good an effect.

If you decide to paint the trim you need to prime it with a plastic primer. See last paragraph: http://gafieroclub.org/bbs/index.php?topic=469.0
It might clean up well with a Mr. Clean magic eraser.
