The 2.8l engine was never designed for high output. You need good breathing thru the intake/heads/exhaust to make good horsepower. The Fiero has none of these. Can you make changes to get better breathing? Yes, but only up to a point. And that point isn't much. And it can get very expensive the more you try to do.
The best thing to do to get more 'oomph' is to change the engine to something with more displacement. There are many write ups in the construction part of the forum about installing engines with larger displacements.
I do urge you though to focus right now on:
1. Make sure the frame is not rotting/rusting out from under the car. Do this first as a car with a rusted out frame is going to need a lot of work and it may not be worth it to go on with upgrades to that car.
2. Get a tune up and replace all the filters. (air, oil, and gas)
3. Making sure the suspension is good. Check all the springs/shock absorbers/bushings to make sure they are still good and replace as necessary.
4. Refurbish the brakes as necessary. When you do the brakes don't forget to have the old brake fluid flushed out with new fluid. And I don't mean have the system bled. Have it FLUSHED. That removes all the old fluid from the system along with all the water and crud that has accumulated. That's why the fluid looks so dark right now, all the crap that's in it.
5. Get a 4 wheel alignment at a shop that knows how to do a 4 wheel alignment and has the proper settings for the Fiero.
When you ask about building for show or race, I certainly hope that when you say RACE it is NOT STREET RACING. The majority here on this forum do not condone street racing.
