88 4 cyl automagic!
Driving home tonight I found that the steering wheel was 'loose' which lead to some interesting driving!
Anyway, once I got home I found that the tilt mechanism is basically loose allowing the tilt part of the assembly to move. Not a lot but more that it should (which is none!).
The actual column is solid, it's just the top part around the tilt.

So I started to pull it all apart thinking that it's probably just the pivot bolts that have come loose. Well, that's what I hoping for, but we shall see.

However I got the instrument panel off and the pivot point is covered by this shroud (A) so my problem is, how do I get the shroud off, or at least out of the way.
I am loath to cut it so I am thinking, unbolt the column bolts at B which will let the column swing down (will it?) then unbolt the bracket (C) beneath the column and that will give me enough space to slide the cover down out of the way so that I can get at the pivot bolts.

Will this work?
Is there a better way or am I going to have to remove the whole column?

If it is the typical screws thay cause it to wobble you have to get to them through pulling the steering wheel, all the guts and reach them through the tunnel.

Search for "saginaw tilt steering column" on youtube. There is a great video of a 93 S10 4x4 that will take you through the steps. Look in Ogre's Cave for the tool list.

Thanks for the info. I did a bit of searching around and found out that of course, it's not as simple as I hoped it would be. Oh well, I guess I'm off to Fiero Mechanics school again!

Yeah getting to tighten those bolts can be a real pain. The real fun I had when I tried to do this same thing to my old 88 was when after getting to those bolts a bearing in there fell out in several pieces. When I went and found the replacement bearing it was cheaper to just buy another used steering column. Good Luck.

Thanks to those old notes by Jazzman I'm about half way through putting it back together. Offending bolts all snug now (with loctite as well).
And I got to learn a whole load of new stuff too about Fieros (like what a fun job working on the steering is!).

Thanks all for the input.

Did you pull the column out? If not, next time do that. It comes out preaty easiely and makes doing it a whole lot easier.

No, just did it in place. It really was not that hard. Even getting the lower ignition housing back on with that 'key' that operates the ignition switch wwas pretty easy following Jazzman's instructions on how to do it.
