Hello folks

My engine is sitting on the floor, getting an F23 installed. It is bone stock other than WCF Fiero headers which I inherited and haven't tried yet (fingers crossed that they don't crack the first day... I am not interested in mounting an intercooler, or pulling apart a very low mileage 2007 motor to put in a cam.

If I go with a 3.5" pulley on an otherwise stock motor, will I be able to increase the boost a bit without causing problems with pinging/knock?

A couple of experienced guys told me that it will be fine...but they are not going to be the ones pulling out their wallets if I blow holes in my pistons.

thanks

I am running a 3.4 pulley on a stock 3800 SC Series II engine in the SE USA with no issues. There is a "custom" tune on the car but that is all. BTW, this car dynoed 258 HP and about 300 ft lbs torque at the wheels with a somewhat custom tune.

thanks

I am no expert, but I believe the Series III is running slightly higher boost from the factory than the Series II already? Just wondering how far I can go with a pulley before it creates problems.

The behavior of an engine using a smaller pulley on a series III engine is totally different than the same pulley installed on a series II engine. I decided to put a 3.4" pulley on my series III w Gen V early on. I utilized some supporting mods using colder Autolite 104 plugs, a 180* stat., 3" exhaust and a redesigned CAI system. Some KR's were evident from the very beginning but with many tweaks to the program, boosting WOT fuel and removing a degree of timing, a few degrees of KR's still remained here and there. That made me uneasy. This past year I installed a SSIC and that did it. All KR's are now at zero. . I was now able to put back the timing and tweak the fuel for additional power.
The question now becomes would a 3.5" pulley cause a similar problem on a series II engine? I would say that performance will be engine dependent and its going to be borderline. Definitely use the supporting mods, Test drive and monitor KR's very carefully but be prepared to add that intercooler. It may be needed .

Could get away with it... You can push a bit more pulley on manual trans cars over normal ones.

Get a mail order tune with extra fuel at wide open.
