I'm doing a Re&Re of my shift and select cables. I've got them all disconnected inside the car and from the tranny. I've gone through the manual and there's nothing I can find about actually removing them completely from the car. Is there a trick to this? If I look in behind the engine, it looks as though the cables go through a set of foam insulated tubes, not unlike you put on hot water pipes. Am I to just remove these completely and pull the cables through the firewall? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping I'm a cable and clutch slave swap away from finally driving this car!

Have yoou removed your center console/glovebox ? Right under your ECM there are rubber grommets where they go through the firewall, just pop those out and they will come right out.

They're not tubes, but grommets that rest on the inside of the car under the ECM holder as eluded to above. You're going to have to remove the center glove box, the ECM and ECM holder, and you'll see the two grommets (there's also one for the throttle cable). I had to split my grommets to remove them. You can remove the cables without doing it, but you'll have to slip the cable through enough to clear the small hole in the grommet (would require some tugging and pulling).

OK, thanks! I was able to get the cables off and the new ones on. I'm not sure if it was the right thing to do, but I cut the grommets with an exacto knife to get them off the old cables and then glued them back together over the new cables. Now the fun part, putting everything back together!

I did the same thing - split them in half and glued them back.
