So I hopped in the car to go to work this morning and within a few seconds of taking off I smell the distinct melting plastic smell. About a block down the road and I see wisps of grey smoke around the center vents area. I stopped the car, turned it off and let it air out. Started it back up a few minutes later and had no repeat issues. Any idea what this could be? Any trouble areas?

Does everything still work? I'm guessing something stopped with the smoke.

I also had a issue like that. My interior had a very strong plastic , electronic burning smell. Mine ended up being a Transistor in the ECU in the center consle. I ended up following my nose to this.

I had a fire last spring. It started in the dash caused by the fan motor resisters and a lot of debre. The car was a total loss. Be carfull with this one.

Took out the blower motor and it had no debris in or around it. Took off the resistor plate and there were no loose debris, but there was the remnants of a burnt leaf in one resistor and some caked on gunk on the other. Wonder if this was a case of a leaf just happening to get stuck in there and now it's done? Coulda swore it smelled electrical though, like plastic melting... hopefully, whatever it was resolved itself!

I had a dash fire from my fuse box. Look there to see if something melted down there. It was because my coolant fan shorted out.

or you should stop smoking...lol

here are some things to check:
does everything work?

heater/AC blower fan (dirty, hair from a mouse stuck in it)
under dash lights (if you have them)
radio harness (if the power cable gets pinched it will ground against the radio and smoke, thought the fuse should pop unless someone wiring it differently)
check under dash power connections.
