Ok so i was watching the video on setting base timing and he drew a diagram on the timing tabs. So the tooth that is supposed to be 12 degrees is the one closet to the trunk of the car? (assuming you are standing over the passenger wheel looking at it? Which that would mean the point in the valley next to that would be 10 degrees. Is this all correct?

Another quick question. Would the timing being off cause blue smoke when the car is started sometimes and black smoke rarely out of the exahust?

I've always heard blue smoke is oil, black smoke is rich fuel, white smoke is water/coolant. Blue smoke when started is worn valve stem seals. Oil seeps into the cylinders when the engine is shut off and burns when you next start it up. The 2.8L in my '85 S10 does the same thing.

Ok that's what I thought just wanted to be sure. Also I just checked my timing and it was set at 2...So got it back up to 10 where it's supposed to be and the thing runs significantly better.
