I have been looking for a nice 4T60 for my 88. They are all high mileage and will require an overhaul. I can find the 4T60E everywhere for cheap , and with low miles. Same mount brackets and shifter brackets are used on both for Fiero applications.
I read here once where it was said you can piggy back a 4t60E ECM to control the transmission, A second temperature sensor would be required I am thinking was mentioned.
Anybody done this. If so where did you place the second ECM? Are any of the 4T60E ECM's mountable inside the engine bay?

Yes it is. I have 2 in my Landcruisers. I have forded rivers over the hood and never had a problem with the computer. Now the passenger was a different story.

With a bit of tuning, this would work. Biggest change would be to change the ignition timing parameters to match a distributor considering the code is set to control a DIS system. Not a big deal though. Other than that, you could use the 3.1 version of the $DF code to start with.

I like the idea of the 396 PCM because of the ability to move the computer out of the passenger compartment, but that is just one persons opinion.
The benefit of the 396 is that instead of having 2 controllers and associated wiring, the single computer is a cleaner install and simpler to boot. No need to make things more complicated than they need to be.

I wouldn't have a clue on how to do this. Seem like those who know, give very scant clues.

Yes there is! Larger then stock ECM's will get too hot under the console with higher power engines (aka more heat), even more so with the insulation there. Like a 3800 series 2 ECM.

My formula has a 4t60. It's great for a D/D because it gets me 26 MPG at 80 MPH. However, it sucks for trying to race someone, the shifts are too uncontrollable.
This car has a 4t65e with lightning rods in it. I dont know how he did it but I can get ahold of him.
Let me dig up some information, but there is a way of using a diesel 4l80E trans controller to control the 4t65e. Could also use a 16197427 PCM as well.

Just got an E mail reply from Ryan from Sinister Performance, asking for information..
Quote "You might be able to use a 16149396 ECM to just control the transmission. It will need its own coolant temp sensor and it will need to share the TPS, MAP, and Ignition Control Reference Pulse signals going to the Fiero ECM. Of course the mem-cal/chip will need to be reprogrammed." Unquote
Seams to me that the best place to put the 2nd ECM would be as close as possable, or, behind the driverrs seat. This is close to where the 2.8 wires go into the Fiero ECM. A great place to 'Leach' sensor signals. 9 sensor wires, plus a few ingition 12+, a few +12 at all times. A few grounds. 7 wires going to the transmission's TCC connector. 2 of which are already there.

I have learned that the 16149396 ECM is an odd ball. It will work on two 4T60E's made for 1993. A 3.1, and a DOHC 3.4. Will not work with the rest. Something to do with the 1st gear and 4th gear switches. These two 4T60E's are not as plentyful as I was hoping. I have purchased a 16196387 including connectors, out of a 95 Buick Century. It will work with just about every thing else 4T60E. Located a 1997 90K 4T60E in Houston for $200.00
