Just a thought... during a rebuild, is it possible to cryo-treat the gears on a 282? Would that make it able to hold a little bit more power? I wouldn't expect a doubling in its torque rating or anything, just wondering if the treatment would make it able to more safely hold 300-400hp from a 3.8? If not, would a F40 be more worth the effort since you can still pick one up for decently cheap?

This is, if the gears arent already treated :P

The problem with the 282 is differential bearing loading and housing, not the gears. You can increase the gear strength all you wish, the case is still going to be the failure point.

Why would you consider an F40 over the F23? Show car?

6 speed and cheapness of the purchase for a brandy new one. Custom parts are no problem because I can fabricate my own from steel plate if needed. Moreso going for a trans that can get me going faster, and stronger, when I do a 3.8LTT Swap.

EDIT TO CLARIFY:
6 speed trans over 5 speed, higher torque rating than F23, More Ability for Higher Top Speed, Brand New F40 for chump change on EBay.

Double overdrives hardly constitute an addition speed. While we're at it, the F23 is a stronger transmission. Top speed in a Fiero.... that's funny. I dare you to go faster than the F23's final gear will allot. You'll crash and die, given the Fiero's wheelbase. You might be able to pick up the F40 for chump change, but the required accessories are expensive.
