Call me paronoid but I have a whine coming from my 88 Duke that sounds like it could be that old altenator or something else on the belt side of the engine but the more I stick my head in the engine bay the more it seems the whin eis coming from within the engine towards the top right around where the CAM is. I'll have to poke around some more with scope to see. what the dealio is.

Take the belt off and see if noise goes away just to eliminate the accessories.

A whine would likely be cam drive gears, not bad cam bearings. Usually the only indication of bad or worn cam bearings is low oil pressure.

Another source of gear whine in the '88 Duke ('88 only) would be the drive gears for the dynamic crankshaft balancer assembly.

Oh yeah I kind of forgot about that. This motor got a brand new force balancer from Rodney Dickman about 2000 miles ago...along with a new crank, also new fiber timing gears. That could very well be. Thanks

Poked around with a scope. My alternator is making noise. That is much better than cam bearings.
