I have an 84 4 speed car. The current trans is an 86 4 speed. I need numerous parts, and cannot find a transaxle for an 85-86 that is mildly affordable.
What all would be involved in putting an 85 or 86 5 speed from the 4cylinder cars in it?

my 84 had a 5 speed In it then I switched it to an 86 4 speed for my 4.9.

basicly you need the trans, mounts, correct slave cyl and push rod, 5 spd shifter assembly and shifter cables.

edited to add: you'll need the right throwout baring for your clutch as well

I found a listing for one for $275. It says : "tranny, pedal, shifter and cables" are included. I am curious if this is a cost effective route. One part on my 4 speed in broken that isn't made anymore.

Just want to get it together the cheapest route. It is a bearing retainer on the output shaft. There are two other parts, but I can get them. I called my local gm dealer and he said not one dealer in the county had the one piece I cannot find. Together I'll have roughly 200 into parts, and still need that last piece, which shouldn't be too expensive if found.
Thanks.

bearing retainer on the output shaft, I'm having trouble picturing the part. Is it part of the input shaft bearing seal? Or the throwout bearing? Well as long as the transmission is still good mainly 2nd gear the ya that's not bad as I bought the 86 trans, cables and mounts for $250.

Put something up in the mall first saying you're seeking that part and see what comes up (if you haven't already)

damn, ya that end piece.... Is it just a threaded low profile head bolt that seals the end of the shaft? See if you can find a cheap junkyard trans and tear the part out of it, unless they are one time use. Otherwise ya go with the 5 speed

A cheap trans is what I need. I believe it is removable. It has splines on the inside to remove it.
The piece on the end is it, mine is obviously broken.

Yeah I am just keeping the duke. I'd really like to just find a crap cheap 4 speed.
