Just curious is all... I cannot seem to find any Getrag 282 dog box converstion gear sets anywhere. Do they exist? I would not mind changing my Getrag to a dogbox when I rebuild it, would be pretty fun, really! I love the sound of spur cut gears...

PM Toddster... back in 2005 he picked up a collection of the webster racing getrag gearboxes and gear sets. I think he sold some of them a while back, but he might still have some, or at least know who he sold them to.

That is correct. Commonly referred to as a transmission with 'spur cut' gearing, when use in a light vehicle application like a car for motor racing, it allows much quicker acceleration. However, noise levels increase dramatically, in addition to potentially shortening the lift of the transmission by a great deal.

Just want to confirm, you mean life right? Wouldn't that only become a factor if you use it under race conditions and shift w/o the clutch?

They are most commonly referred to as straight cut and they do nothing to improve acceleration times simply because they are straight cut, althoigh they do absorb slightly less power in operation. A close ratio gear set, whether conventional or straight cut WILL enhance acceleration. They are also a bit stronger, which can be useful if you have a marginal gearbox for whatever torque you have. This isn't an issue with Fieros as even V8 versiosn stand up well.

I assure you you'd get tired of the noisy whine pretty quick on the street. I have used these on the track, and that is where they should stay.

The Dog Engagement is what I mainly want, and I understand they are significantly louder than helical cut gears. The prices I have seen for a dog engagement transmission are really really high. I am going to convert my current Fiero for SCCA GT Racing, once I read the rules some more, but I don't want to spend $10,000 on just a transmission. Since I have a Getrag I wouldnt mind increasing its strength with the spur cut gears. The strength increases with spur cut but its side-effect is definately the noise. So loud and obnoxious that in normal cruising applications it would be so droning you couldnt drive the car very long.

But anyway, thanks for the info guys! I'll have to PM Toddster about them, and about price. I am weighing options mainly, as I usually do. I have too many ideas, too little money :P.

EDIT: There are also Helical Cut Dog-boxes, that use helical cut gears with dog engagement.

To those who don't know what dog engagement is...
