Here is my dilemma. I have a water leak between the block and lower intake on a 3800SCII. So I am going have to do some engine work. The history of the engine is unknown. I bought from someone who bought is used. I got the swap running and it ran 400 mile before I developed the problem. I will be pulling the engine to do the work. Since the history is unknown, I think it would be wise to do a valve job. If I do a valve job, I maybe also change the cam.

Or I could get another engine.

It looks like I can get a low mileage 3800SCIII for 1K. I know the Series III is drive by wire. I would need to build or buy an adapter plate to use the Series II throttle body. What other modifications would I need to make to the wiring harness work? Are all the connectors compatible with the Series II harness? This is a list of components that require connectors:
BC solenoid
Injector
MAP
Knock sensors
Cam sensor
EGR solenoid
O2 sensor

The car has a 5 speed Getrag. The current engine has WCF header with a 2 1/2 exhaust and a CAI.

Looking for suggestions.
Thanks
Frank

Depending on the year harness that you use, some connectors will be the same and some will be different. The alternator MAP, TPS and MAF sensor connectors most likely need to be changed. Changing the injector connectors to Bosch EV6 connectors on your harness will be required on the series III engines. Also you will need a compatible MAF, O2 sensor, cable TB and adapter plate.. It usually costs several hundred more to set up a ETC engine for cable TB use so the value of this can only be determined by yourself.

The LIM leak is a common issue..What effects did this leak have on the motor? Did the motot start to knock or did you catch the problem...If the motor is still good besides the leak I would just fix the leaks....If it caused other issues and you have the funds then I would get another motor...Eveything you have on S2 motor can be used to make the S3 motor work with no issues...The only thing that would have to be bought is a adapter plate for TB...

sounds like a 1 hour fix to me. ...unless you have rod knock. If not, then just change the gasket and do a few oil changes.
