The decklid on my car is not the original, the new decklid has the automatic lock mechanism and the wiring, and there is a wire harness that plugs into it coming from the car. There is no switch inside the car to pop the trunk, is it just a matter of getting a switch and putting it in, should all the wiring be there?

You need the switch and a relay which is below the tach in the dash. The relay is a horn relay which you can pull from the passengers side which is next to the blue dingy thing for reference. The wiring is simple to fine and that's all you'd need. I've done it four or five times and to include the decklid wiring.
Quick note.. when adding the popper relay.. if you try to buy one of these as a "trunk popper relay" the cost is INSANE.... like 100 bucks.
Horn relay works just as well. Someone in the mall has an extra, I'm sure.
Since your wiring is already run, the wires that connect to the popper button are taped in there behind the blackout panel. All you need is to find a working button, plug it in, plug in the wiring coming out of the decklid into the harness on the firewall, and put a horn or popper relay into the holder up underneath the dash..as stated, next to the blue dingy thing. It really could not be simpler unless someone did it for you.
By the way, at least with my car, the emergency break needs to be set and key off before the popper button will work.

If it's an 84, all the wiring is there, you just need the dash switch. There is no relay on 84's the popper works with key in ON position in any gear. If you have the trunk solenoid on the lid you should already have the wire sticking out at the driver side rear of the decklid. there is a corresponding connector near the driver side hinge, sometimes it's a bit buried but it will be there. I believe the trunk release was dealer installed on the 84's so all cars had the wiring.

When you say the relay is under the tach, what do yu mean? Do I have to take the gauge faceplate off or something? I found the wiring behind where the switch goes, just as expected, but I don't see a spot for a relay near the fuse panel or anything?

So are you guys saying that it's very likely the Fiero's came with the solenoid activated latch even if they didn't have the remote release option? (I'm questioning on all, but 87 imparticular).

Nope. The main harness is pre-wired for it, but you still need the solenoid, wiring harness from that solenoid through the decklid to the main harness plug, a relay for under the dash and a switch.
I have a complete kit for '85-'88 Fieros and may have a few extra relays and an extra switch lying around. It is very easy to install and is a very convenient option to have.
I put one in my '86, it really was a piece of cake... You don't /really/ need the wiring harness, but it certainly makes it a little easier to fish it through the channel in the decklid. I just ran a wire down through the channel, and sorta jerry-rigged it into the plug. It's hanging near the passenger-side decklid hinge... it's a 3 or 4 wire connector, black, and green I think?
There's a really nice writeup on the trunk release in The Ogre's Cave, under "Electrical / Other Systems / Trunk Release
The biggest issue I have, is my switch keeps breaking! I've bought 2 from the Fiero Store and both of them have had the mechanism inside of them snap... I don't know if theirs are just cheap or what... I'm very easy on things, I'm not punching the switch, just a light press.

Yep, did this to my 88 coupe, cost was damn near nothing. Made a switch from a newer car button, used the blank spot on the stock dash panel. Installed the relay, trunk lid came with the release. Just plug and play.
