The squealing ac belt on my 1985 2.5 is driving me nuts. What's the procedure for adjusting the belt? I got under the car and loosened up the 2 lower compressor bracket bolts but couldn't move it. Is there another bolt , and what's the correct way to leverage the compressor? Thanks

You also have to loosen the top bolt(s) a little, so the compressor can pivot.

On the V6, the bottom A/C bracket has holes in it that you can stick a screwdriver into, and pry on the compressor. I can't remember if the Duke has that. If not, you could try sticking a piece of 2x4 between the compressor and engine block.

BTW, welcome to the forum.

I made the gizmo on the left, stuff it between the main pulley and the compressor pulley and expand it using a wrench on the nut. Once you have the belt where you want it, tighten up the compressor bolts (don't forget to remove it before starting the engine!)

Oh, and welcome to the madness.

Make sure you have the right belt. Some stores will sell you a belt that's an inch too long.

Ask me how I know.

With the proper belt I can just use a screwdriver in the bolt slot to tension the compressor.

Do I need to also loosen a 3rd bolt on the top side? If it's the one underneath the insulated line that runs across the front of the engine bay how do I get to it?
Has anyone ever tried removing the passenger side inner wheel well liner to service the belts?
