Not aways true.... depend on trans. see my cave, gear ratio in axle & trans section. 4 Of 5 Fiero manual trans, 1st gear is lower than reverse. Example: Isuzu (4cyl) 1st = 3.73:1 reverse = 3.50:1
Keeping a block of wood etc is a good plan. Been then, done that.

Gear cut... Depend on trans. not all are straight cut for reverse.
Bearing... Bearing carry enough oil to lube when starting off. And need more that one bearing in trans... Some bearing are using in both directions...
