I can't figure out what should be connected to this small unit in front of the cruise control servo. Its in front of the large servo where the red the red connector is. There are two nipples: one is sealed but the other has a hose clasp and it looks like it take a line. I've checked the Service manual and it doesn't show anything connected to it.

What we used to do to make those foam filters was go to home depot, and get one of those cheapie foam paint brushes. Then use an x-acto-knife to make a nice little foam filter

Why am I suddenly getting red X for many pics, not all. This one is an example. Properties says "Hyper text transfer proticol" Type: "unavailable". Happening on a few other threads also.

From what I heard so far it doesn't sound like an important component or is it? What does this unit do? Will it affect engine vacuum?
It's a electro/vacuum switch for the cruise control. If the hose is on the opposite side from the 2 open ports then there shouldn't be any kind of leak. It releases the vacuum from the cruise control when it's switched off either by the turn signal stalk or brake/clutch switches

Essentially anything that "Vents" vacuum is really sucking air in your engine. you wanna suck air in without some sort of filter? sure, with its location its unlikely to realyl pickup much of anything, but still.
I'd guess that 99% of all Fieros are running around without that little foam filter anymore. They dry rotted and fell off 15 years ago on most cars. They're not needed in my opinion simply because there's so little air that's sucked in through that little port, and then it only happens for a split second when you turn the cruise off and it releases the vacuum in the servo. Hardly an engine contamination concern, especially considering the size of the orifice.

Thanks guys. That solves that mystery. Strange that the Official Service Manual doesn't give any information about it! Well, I had plugged it to avoid possible vacuum leaks. I'm going to see if I can put some sort of filter.
